About Doc

Lab mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Doc showed up in our yard about 1 month ago. It was evident he was injured and had likely been hit by a car. Upon scanning him we found he did have a microchip, but it was registered to the OKC Animal Shelter. They were able to contact the owner, but due to financial hardship the dog hasn't been in his possession for some time and he is unable to care for even the pet's basic needs. Doc was surrendered to us without hesitation from the owner. While in our care Doc has had the following medical treatment: 1. Neutered 2. Fractured teeth extracted 3. Entropion surgery to both eyes 4. Full lab work including heartworm test (negative) 5. Fecal exam (negative) 6. Vaccines (DHL4PP, Rabies, Bord) 7. Monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention 8. He is eating Purina Pro Plan Savor Adult Chicken and Rice 9. He's been to the groomers 3 times and done great as well Doc still needs the following medical treatment: 1. His left hip is dislocated and cannot be put back into place. He will need an FHO (femoral head osteotomy) and subsequent rehabilitation. *He can have this surgery any time. As a professional courtesy to my husband and I a colleague of ours will perform the surgery for $1k which is about 50% less than normal. We paid out of pocket for everything so far. The orthopedic surgery we cannot afford out of pocket and have raised $500 roughly for him. We are about $500 short right now. Doc is a 2-year-old black altered lab mix. He is roughly 65lbs to 70lbs. He is microchipped and UTD on vaccines etc. Pros to Docs personality: 1. Housebroken 2. Crate trained 3. Takes a week to warm up to you, but then he believes he is a 10lb lap dog 4. Loves car rides and loads up in a truck with ease 5. Does not appear to chase our livestock 6. He is the laziest lab I have ever met. Very low key! 7. More of an indoor dog than an outdoor dog 8. Knows some basic commands 9. Very affectionate Cons to Docs personality: 1. Food aggressive 2. Not fully trained on a leash 3. Does not do well with other male dogs, but does great with females 4. Eats shoes We have 4 dogs of our own and one of them is male. He plays all day and night with the female dogs without issue. 50% of the time our male Aussie and him get along, but as Doc gets more and more attached to me he is becoming more protective and does not let out male dog near me. This causes fights. Yesterday, Doc and Rooster had a knock down drag out fight which resulted in minor scrapes or lacerations to Doc. However, our Aussie required sutures and may have a broken leg. Ideally, Doc would go to an older couple with grown kids or a single person without children. Because of the pain his hip causes him right now I would be apprehensive to place him with young children in case they tugged on him the wrong way. Make sense? Doc would be fine in a home with 1-2 other female dogs as well. We were hoping to keep Doc forever since we love him so much. With that said, we can't keep him in our home with the male on male tension/fighting between the two male dogs. We need to have Doc placed somewhere in the next week if not sooner.
