About Dixie

Dixie is a 10-13 year old Lab-mix Female. (She presents as a lab.) She has been living with a 92-year, single man for the last 7 years. Dad had a part-time job that kept him out of the house 5-6 hours a day. She had no problem being alone that long. He did have her crate trained - but we do not do that. I've not seen her exhibit any chewing on anything in the house. She is approximately 70-80 pounds. Exceptionally strong. She does have a tag on her head and a bump on the side of her mouth - but it does not impact her at all. She can 'sit', 'down' and mostly 'stay'. She walks on a leash and will pull to smell everything. She is house-dog and LOVES people, and does not bark at humans. She's not used to being around other dogs, but we have walked her with a friend's chihuahua - it went well. There was no growling or 'prey' behaviors exhibited. I really believe with a little time, she can easily adjust to other dogs. She's a very calm dog. I've never seen her with children - but I can only imagine that she would be pretty calm. She loves to be with people and will follow you anywhere. We walk her 3-4 times a day. She is a house dog. I have given her doggy baths in the shower - she doesn't pull or get upset. I had her shots updated this summer when dad's health was going down. I also had her teeth cleaned and several teeth removed. We feed her twice a day -- crunchies and doggie bones - no problem. She does drink a lot of water. She needs someone to work on trimming her nails on a more regular basis. (Had them done this summer at the vet.) We have only had her for about 10 days -- when Dad went into the hospital. We live in a condo that does not allow dogs. I would happily drive Dixie to meet someone, understanding that it's not a done deal. She is a fabulous dog - and if we could have a dog, we would keep her.
