About Riker (west)

Pit Bull mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

SCHEDULED FOR EUTHANASIA. Hi, my name is RIKER ID#A4488592. I am a neutered male, blue and white American Pit Bull Terrier, and I weigh about 70 lbs. The shelter staff think I am about a year old, and I have been at the shelter since October 19, 2020. Riker is scheduled for euthanasia in the next few days. He is deteriorating in his kennel. This happens to all social animals eventually when they have been incarcerated for long periods of time. They need social interaction whether with other dogs or people. Likely having lived on the street for all of his life, he does not understand being caged up. Riker is dog selective, but friendly with some dogs. He is gentle in playing, and takes treats gently also. He knows 'sit' and loves to have butt scratches. The kennel environment really frightens him. Unless we find a home for Riker in the next fews days, he will not leave the shelter alive. Here are the latest notes about Riker: 11/4/2020 ENRICHMENT Easy to leash, but pulled the entire walk. He's very energetic. Takes treats nicely and is very friendly. Tried to fence fight with a number of dogs when taking him back to his kennel. 11/6/2020 OBSERVATION Dog is barking at another dog; unable to distract with treats, lunging at kennel in front of staff and digging at bars of kennel. 11/9/2020 WALK Riker was a moderate pull; jumpy and barky at first; focused on and pulled twowards other dogs in wing and on walk but responded to my corrections fairly well; during walk tail was wagging; slightly startled by traffic passing; pulled at first but settled down quickly and walked well on leash; took hot dogs nicely; easy kennel return but still focused on other dogs around. 11/15/2020 WALK Riker barked a few times at his kennel door. Made him stand still to leash him. bolted out the building. Walking passed H/G he was continually pushing to get between visual barriers. Outside of shelter walking was much easier. He slightly pulls but also is easier to walk when away from other dogs. He's less affiliative in the yard. Had to encourage him to come see me for treats. When he did seek attention, he was gentle with treats, knows sit, let me scratch butt. 'URGENT' If you have no breed restrictions, please call ASAP = 520-800-4633.
