About Joy

Pit Bull mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Joy...happy happy joy joy, wiggle butt and waggy tail. Meet Joy! She loves life and will wiggle her butt and wag her tail into your life. She is a fighter, as well. Considering the condition she was rescued in, this girl has come a long way. She's shown resilience through adversity in her short life. She is a 2 year old boxer/pit mix weighing in at 58# of joyfulness. Joy was rescued in deplorable conditions. She was famished, covered in sores and infections, scarred and missing an eye. Yet, Joy showed her rescuer her fighting and joyful spirit! Before arriving to Illinois, Joy was treated for several infections as well. She's one tough cookie! Joy arrived to Illinois and showed gratitude and joy as she adapted to her new surroundings! She's been fostered in a home with 2 adult humans and 1 foster male dog. Joy has many positive attributes. She is housebroken, a cuddler, not food aggressive, likes her fruits and veggies, can be left at home outside of her crate, does not chew anything she's not supposed to, sleeps either in your bed (if allowed) or in her dog bed through the night and will not awake until you're out of bed, and walks pretty good on a leash. Joy has been learning to play. She will engage in short play of tug but also enjoys gnawing on bones. Joy was also able to jog for 3 miles and enjoyed basking in the sun. Playing fetch...not yet. But she is trainable and treat motivated! She has learned sit, stay and down. Joy is currently much healthier than when she arrived. She arrived with allergies and would scratch, lick and nip her feet, legs and body. Joy received treatment and also a diet change was made. Joy responded well to treatment and is less itchy due to a salmon based dog food. In addition, Joy also had surgery to close her right eye. Just when you thought this pup couldn't sustain much more, Joy was also heartworm positive and has just completed treatment! Due to treatment, Joy's amount of play and excitement had to be reduced while she was healing. Joy is still a pup and adapting to life in the comfort of a warm home, secure feedings and plenty of love. She still needs work on learning to play. She will run after you to play catch but will nip at your clothing. She likes to jump and engage in play but will nip and use her mouth in play (she does not bite). Joy gravitates towards young children but due to her mouth play, would do better with older children. As a matter of fact, although Joy has a foster brother, she'd probably enjoy being the only dog as she can get possessive and can be an attention hog. She will be your shadow and lay behind your feet as you cook (welcoming any food bits: she likes apples, pears, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, berries, etc), wash dishes, do laundry or while you sit and eat. Wherever you go, Joy will be right behind or beside you if you are on the couch. She also enjoys car rides and going places with you. She'll be a ready copilot! She is highly affectionate and loves your pets, kisses, hugs, belly rubs and being carried! Aside from her occasional snaps on her dog brother, she is a gem! Joy is seeking her forever home where she can leave her past behind her and she can look ahead to safety, love and lots of joyful moments.
