About Hanna (Tri-Pawed)

Adoption Fee: $125
Australian Kelpie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Hanna was picked up by Oakland Animal Control and taken to the ER vet to evaluate a front broken leg. It was determined that the break was not recent and she was transferred to the shelter. She was timid with strangers, but sweet at the same time. Due to the condition of her leg (which needed to be amputated), and an additional torn cruciate ligament on her back leg, she needed a medical rescue. The shelter called us and we took her into foster care. We first amputated the front leg, and gave her 3 weeks to recover, before doing TPLO surgery on her back leg. However, after her TPLO surgery, she developed a MRSA infection in the surgical leg. After weeks of potent antibiotics, it wasn't getting better and the leg wasn't healing very quickly. The decision was made to remove the TPLO hardware after the leg heals. Five months later, we finally removed the hardware and then focused on clearing up the infection. After another 4 weeks on antibiotics, she was finally cleared for adoption. Hanna has spent months on cage rest and wearing an e-collar. That, along with Covid-19 restrictions, has made it difficult to properly socialize her with strangers and new environments. She loves other dogs and she is bonded with her foster family, but barks at strangers. She isn't aggressive, and allows handling by anyone, but is shy. She is a young, active playful dog that would love to run and chase squirrels or lizards that she finds outside. And she loves playing with other dogs, but care has to be taken that she doesn't over do it, given that she has only 3 legs. She should probably be leashed when she is outside and when walking up/down stairs. Interaction with other dogs should be restricted to indoor playing and always supervised. Given her prey drive, NO CATS!. She would probably adjust to a new home more quickly if there was another dog her size already living in the home that she could bond with, but the dogs will need to be fed separately. She is very smart and learns commands and tasks very quickly. For more information about Hanna, contact [email protected]
