About Rufio

Adoption Fee: $350
Australian Cattle Dog / Border Collie
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

This is Rufio. He is a great dog!! He loves to be with people and outside. He's a great hiker, is kinda OK with swimming, and LOVES the dog park! We've had him for roughly 3 months, and the person before 1 month - before that his history is unknown. He's about 1 year old! Temperament: He has been introduced to strangers and kids generally paying them no mind. He can get excited with other dogs, but the most he has done is get a little loud (warning growls) and can occasionally be annoying to bigger dogs (licking). He has been introduced to cats, and initially was obsessive. He has calmed down somewhat over the past month. He obesses over the neighborhood rabbits. It is the hardest part of our walks - he has a very hard time listening when he becomes fixated. He doesn't really bark. But he does make some strange and potentially scary noises. He is a VERY vocal dog - especially when you try to tickle him. We have been training! He is generally OK when on the leash. He is 100% better when he is on a walk alone with you. He knows Sit, Stay, Paw, Come, Crawl, Rollover, Spin, Up, Down, Paws-Off, go-to-bed/Kennel, leave it, take it. He will need regular training to maintain and continue to improve his listening. He needs a lot of work on emergency recall. We've taught him how to play fetch, he likes to tug on the rope. He LOVES squeaky toys and bones. While he is potty trained, we are working on using bells to let people know when he needs to go outside. We have also trained him to sit in chairs and stay while you go about your business. We found that this is easier than making him sit in the corner to stay out of the way! MEDICAL: By the time anyone asks about him we expect to have him Fully Vaccinated and Neutered. He seems to be allergic to something at my house so he gets a bath once a week, and gets allergy shots when he shows signs of being itchy. His fur is VERY thick and makes him over-heat easily in the summer, and makes it hard to get all the soap out! I also got him a DNA TEST. He's 49% Heeler, 20% Border Collie. I will provide all medical and breed info upon rehoming. So if he's such a great dog why are you rehoming? Well, when we got him we weren't given the full picture. First, he wines, A LOT. He didn't calm down and stop whining constantly for the first whole month. We realized it might be an allergy because he was also scratching like crazy, got him a shot and he calmed down a little. Now he whines when he doesn't get his way, for attention and stress. Which also seems to be all the time. Once he starts it is hard for him to stop. He will whine for hours - especially if you put him in timeout to calm him down. He has separation anxiety too. It was super bad in the beginning he tore my screen door, and broke out of his kennel due to my carelessness. He also used to howl and bark when I left but I think that has mostly stopped. Due to COVID19 I am at home and have been able to train him and work on him a bit but because he needs so much attention, and behavioral help I don't think I can keep him long term. He needs to be adopted by someone who can take care of his behavioral needs, and get him allergy shots if he needs them. His fee is to cover some of his expenses.
