When Evander arrived at our shelter, he had a towel taped around his head, with crusted blood and open wounds all over his body. He was scared, not feeling well, and the finder told us that he was not acting very nice to people (can you blame him?!). Once out of his kennel, all we found was the sweetest, most gentle boy who allowed us to get him help, even though it must have been so painful. When we were able to unwrap the towel, we found that his ear had been all but ripped off, but was still dangling by a thread. The wounds on his face, back, and neck were infected and sore, some swollen to the size of a baseball. He also had what appeared to be tumors on his underbelly that were purple and black--not looking good; our work was cut out for us. First step was surgery to have his ear flap amputated. Within a few days of pain meds and antibiotics for the wounds, he was feeling MUCH better! The next obstacle to tackle was his growths: we were so thrilled to get the pathology results that showed that those were not cancerous. Then came his blood test: positive for heartworm. It felt like this guy couldn't catch a break. Back on daily medication he went, as he prepares for the heartworm treatment--treatment that is sponsored, so there will be no cost to his adopter. More blood work after that showed that he is otherwise in pretty good health and his body is ready for the treatment for the heartworms. This guy has been through so much, and he has remained so, so sweet throughout everything. Even when we had to clean his dangling ear flap, and flush out his painful wounds, all Evander would do was stand still and try to lean in for hugs. This boy is truly special and has the kindest soul. He is estimated to be 5-6 years old. He has nice manners and enjoys meeting new people. He is gentle on a leash, and non-reactive when walking by the other dogs, although he doesn't like to be face to face with other dogs--would much rather ignore. We do have to warn people, though--he is VERY good at working the puppy dog eyes and convincing you to share your lunch!! BEWARE! He is looking for a home that enjoys snuggles, has no other dogs, doesn't laugh at him when he chases his tail on the daily, can keep him on his heartworm treatment schedule (it's pretty easy, and we help you!) and most importantly, can start a new chapter of his life, where he can find a forever family and the care he deserves. ? His adoption fee is $145 and he is neutered, up to date on parasite prevention, vaccinated, and microchipped.
