About Dexter

Date into Rescue: 9/6/2020 Reason for being in rescue: Dexter was found as a stray by a staff member. His owners were found, but they decided to surrender him to rescue and help him find the right forever home. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Lots of energy!!!! Weight: est 40 lbs but he's low and compact - lots of good muscle tone! Height: est 21 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? Dexter was originally brought to his home as a puppy but sadly, an accident sidelined his active family into a very sedentary lifestyle. Dexter needed more than they could give. They found a home but the home did not watch carefully and Dexter went a wandering for more action. He found Makayla, one of our caregivers with an affinity for bully breeds. She took him in and we were able to backtrack to find his first owner and get the whole story. Dexter s a young, active, playful puppy. He would love to have another active dog in his home but it's not a necessity. He would do well in a dog park setting to make up for not having a dog in the home. Dexter is good with other dogs and cats!! He likes to hump other dogs sometimes but I think this is because he was alone when he was very young and he still needs manners with other dogs. He loves them but does not need to know how to play but he's learning. Dexter will need a fence in his home, young children are not recommended because he has a lot of puppy energy. He would love an active lifestyle with lots of walks and tons of play time! What is my personality like? He does well on his leash but is pretty active so would need a stern owner to correct his pulling as necessary(works best with treats and positive reinforcement). Dexter does not like being told no!! He enjoys toys of any kind!! He is good in his crate and will start whining if he has to potty! He is mostly house trained and knows a handful of commands such as sit and down. We are working on more. Dexter can get too excited outside and jump up and nip at your arms, we are redirecting this behavior by giving him a toy when he does this. He can be mischievous and hunt down things to get into but this is only when he gets bored and hasn't had enough time to play! Also he is a weird pooper lol and likes to walk while he poops, so I always know if he poops inside because he leaves a trail How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly, affectionate and happy all the time. Other tips and tidbits: Birthdate is 3/26/2020 est. Dexter is very loving and loves to cuddle when he is all tuckered out!! Dexter is a puppy who is growing into a young man and still needs to learn a few manners and would love someone to understand this and show him how to be a good boy all the time! House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
