TO BE KILLED - OCT. 22, 2020 HANDSOME AND SMART YOUNG BOY CUCUMBER HAS MADE A TURN-AROUND! Cucumber was very scared at his intake, being in a strange place with lots of sad, scared and crying dogs. He defended himself from the strangers who were trying to restrain him. He's a smart boy! And smart dogs distrust strangers, and then observes them, then they eventually start to trust. That's what Cucumber did. He's impressed the staff training him too! Cucumber needs to feel loved and secure, after what happened to him. It's not that difficult because look at him now! He's sweet and responds beautifully to kindness. Please help this young boy to find a good home so he can get out of this place! For these reasons, he is a poor candidate for a handling assessment at this time. DOG-DOG: Summary: 7/13: Cucumber initially appears a bit tense and uncertain greeting the helper dog on leash. He re-approaches, shows more interest in greeting with less tension and a brief wag. FUN FACTS: Summary (1): 7/29/20: Cucumber readily engages in hand targeting, with the handler moving the hand target further away for him to touch. He is at first difficult to lure into a sit, but after a few attempts begins to sit for a hand signal. 8/3/20: Cucumber continues to engage in cue training sessions, readily touching a hand target. We begin to work on leave it which he starts to pick up quickly. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake: 6-Jul-2020 Summary: Panting, whining MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial: 6-Jul-2020 Summary: Lunging, baring teeth, snapping ENERGY LEVEL: At the care center, Cucumber displays a medium-high level of activity. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Cucumber remains fearful with unfamiliar handlers, reacting to them by lunging forward, growling, and snapping while in his kennel. He has warmed up in the kennel to handlers who have spent a lot of time giving him treats and allowed them to take him out, warming up significantly with them as he gets to know them more and beginning to display social behavior towards them. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only Recommendations: No children (under 13) Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments: No children: Due to the rapid escalation to aggression Cucumber has displayed at the care center, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the rapid escalation to aggression Cucumber has displayed at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Cucumber has displayed the potential to quickly escalate to growling, lunging, and snapping at handlers. During his initial medical exam, he displayed this towards people approaching him and walking into the room. He also shows this behavior towards unfamiliar handlers who approach his kennel. He has warmed up to select handlers while in the kennel, but remains aloof with them once out of the kennel. He will need a very slow approach and time to acclimate to unfamiliar people and surroundings. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
