If you are interested in this dog, please complete an ARK application by copying and pasting this link into your browser: https://tiny.cc/ARK-Application Serious inquiries please email ARK for more information: [email protected] This loyal, sweet soul is Minnie! She needs a CONFIDENT, EXPERIENCED dog owner with a routine ACTIVE lifestyle, who will play fetch and walk/run/hike with her, and be willing to CONTINUE WORKING on her FEAR-BASED AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR through POSITIVE training! She needs a single-family home with a fenced yard and quiet surroundings. We've had many applications for Minnie, but she requires a person with specific experience with managing a dog's fear-based aggression. If you can provide all this to her, then please read on! Minnie is a 1.5 year-old, 50-pound Australian Shepherd/herding dog located in Quincy, MA. She is house-trained, spayed, and UTD on shots. She feeds off the energy around her, good or bad, but quickly becomes comfortable around a confident, calm handler, expressing her appreciation with cuddles, full-body wags, and kisses. Minnie lived a sheltered life and has a tremendous fear of strangers. BUT with routine practice, she's becoming more confident each day! This girl is a fast learner and highly treat-motivated! Turns out, she loves car rides, nature walks, toys, and meeting dogs on (socially distanced) walks, but her favorite is playing fetch with the Chuck-it in a quiet gated park early in the morning. She's a strong dog with sport and herding breeds in her blood, so walking her on a leash will require someone with strength enough to control a 50-pound dog with a built-in sporadic squirrel missile. Though modest in nature and meticulously self-groomed, Minnie was built for agility, as she can jump high and run FAST. It's part of her morning routine to exercise, which calms her anxiety for the rest of the day. She works hard, then hardly works, because she'll spend the rest of the day napping on the couch. She lived with a cat that occupies a different part of the home, but goes into 'prey mode' when she sees it. But Minnie is very responsive to her humans and has emotional intelligence, which is rare to say of a dog-she understands tone, volume, and body language and even emotional behavior. She understands a guardian's approval (or disapproval) even with the slightest of looks or gestures and is learning obedience commands (and sign) quickly. She's pretty good at sit, stay, drop it, down, and no. Food-driven and eager are two attributes that serve her well in building her knowledge, skills, and confidence as a young dog. Minnie has the potential to be a 'dream dog,' but only with owners who are willing to work with her on her social skills around new people and dogs until she becomes comfortable. Her fearful bark can be alarming (she's progressively 'unlearning' this behavior), so she'd need to continue to be regularly shown that her source of fear is not a threat. She also needs a couple quiet weeks to settle into a routine and learn the home and 'hood with her patient owners with slow introductions to things%BD'%BD| like most rescue dogs! The gift of time and daily routine is what allows her progress to skyrocket. Minnie is a good dog. She will start up your day with sunshine and some good fetch while you have your morning coffee, and wind down your day with hilarious lounging positions and sweet cuddles. Her way of showering her beloved humans with love and affection is unmatched, as she will live to adore and impress you until the end of her days. Minnie is too nervous to live with kids and she must be the only pet. She has never been around cats and is uncomfortable around other dogs. Sorry, no apartment, city, or high traffic neighborhood. Her ideal home is steady and predictable, meaning limited comings and goings from visitors and strangers.
