About PIPER

Shetland Sheepdog
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

UPDATE: Piper had his appointment and echocardiogram with the Cardiologist. The diagnosis of a ventricular septal defect (VSD) was (per Dr. Hatton ) the best possible outcome. A VSD is a hole located in the ventricular wall (septum) that allows blood to communicate between the left and right sides of the heart. This is a congenital defect that is present in dogs and cats at birth. The prevalence is relatively low in dogs and slightly more common in cats. Piper's hole was very small and didn't indicate the need for either surgery or medication. Dr. Hatton did recommend a follow up in a year although she felt he would live a very normal life without any interventions. Piper is now scheduled to be neutered November 3rd. He continues to make slow but steady advancements with human trust; however, will need to remain in rescue longer unless or until a very qualified applicant ( with past puppy mill dog experience) as well as another playful/friendly dog ( preferably another sheltie ) lives in the home. We have no doubt that Piper will one day be a very confident little boy; however, we must allow him to do so in his own comfortable time frame. THIS IS WHAT RESCUE IS ALL ABOUT ! Please not apply to adopt him if you do not meet these requirements as just being a former sheltie owner is not enough for this particular boy. ***************************************************************** Piper is currently on medical hold after being diagnosed with a heart murmur and arrhythmia at his wellness exam. In order know as much about his condition as possible prior to adoption, we have scheduled an appointment with a cardiologist on Oct. 28th. Additional information will be provided after that time as well as scheduling his neuter. Until that time, we are working on his socialization (he's still very shy due to being released by a breeder) and household etiquette. He really perks up when other friendly, small dogs are around; therefore, it will be necessary to have another outgoing dog in the home. Piper's adoptive family should have previous shy dog experience. A FENCED YARD is also necessary.
