About Sampson

Adoption Fee: $500
Saint Bernard
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Now accepting applications!!! This stunning 2 year old male, 160+ pounds, waited 4 months for us to be able to take him into our program! He has a history of dominance and social/fear aggression issues! He is great with cats, livestock and some dogs. He has been getting a lot of rehabilitation training and socialization to overcome his fears with new people, territory and dominance issues. He is the biggest love bug to those he trusts, but needs to learn that he does not have to be the alpha in all situations. He will not be able to live in a home with children under 16, but we know the right home is out there for him! He will soon be ready for adoption so we are now taking applications for him! Sampson is a seriously fun and goofy boy that has worked soooo hard to get better. He came to us with a previous trauma with animal control, due to pain aggression that also led to severe stranger aggression. He had a bite with his previous owner during a vet visit when they cornered him to cut his nails. Samson does not do well with being cornered or trapped due to his previous trauma. He went to a board & train facility with a trainer in Florida that used E-Collar only training with him, unfortunately this made him WORSE! In aggression cases, these should be used very minimally and only to get the attention of the dog. Pain caused by his own medical issues or by others makes his aggression worse, as it will with many aggression issues! Sampson also has hip dysplasia for which he takes supplements and medication, this helped his pain issue tremendously. We took him and had to start over with him, first earning trust, then earning and giving respect and that took several weeks before we could even think about doing obedience and behavioral training. He also had a bite with one of our volunteers soon after we got him during an introduction, that went all wrong. We truly believe it was a wrong place at the wrong time situation, but we are always honest about these situations. After that incident we have not introduced him to anyone outside our home other than our trainer during his evaluation, until recently as we complete rehabilitation training and he has done well on slow proper introductions! During his evaluation he lunged at our trainer when she walked up behind him and I from behind. Now months later, he does not show any signs of aggression and has been incredible. We have been working him 2x a day in my busy neighborhood, public stores and parks with desensitization around people, kids, bikes, dogs and lots of activities going on around him. Recent training sessions he allowed 3 different handlers to handle him. He allowed them all to crowd him, walk behind him and even took control and gave commands to him. He got his nails trimmed by them, gave them his belly (ultimate sign of trust) and conquered everything we threw at him with flying colors! I am SOOOOO proud of him it's beyond words. Sampson's next step to conquer will be strangers in his territory, which is our last phase of training. Then he will be able to be adoptable! This process is a long one with these cases and every dog dictates their own pace, not us! This is the most important thing about dealing with behavior modification in aggression cases, we must NOT RUSH the process. If you are looking for a Saint Bernard or mix, we always have them coming in as we rescue & deliver Nationwide! Please email us for an application so we can work on finding you the perfect match. We do not always have all of our dogs listed as some are new and not ready for posting yet!
