Maverick entered the shelter a big boisterous boy that loved everybody. His rescuer said he was an excited, hyper, lovable dog in her home. As his stay at the shelter went on for weeks and weeks, we saw his behavior change and his anxiety increase. A wonderful foster has taken Maverick into his home and these are his observations: Maverick has been in my home for a couple of weeks now, because the stress from the shelter was overwhelming him. Some dogs handle the shelter fine, other dogs just don't do well. He has relaxed, stopped his anxiety medicine and is gaining much needed weight. I foster a lot of dogs, especially puppies and what I have noticed with Maverick is he is like a large 1YR old dog with mentality of a 6 week old puppy. He does not know his size or power, thinks he is still a small puppy. It is so important for dogs to spend a lot of time with their moms and get her care when a puppy, to get the socialization, biting, chewing, playing, etc skills for life. Maverick is a great dog, just teaching him those basics right now. He is learning to socialize with my pack of 5 dogs very well. He is great most of the time, then he gets bored and starts running circles around some of my dogs, messing with them looking for a reaction or play time. He will never bite my dogs, I'm only worried mine may nip at him, which they have, because he doesn't know when to stop. They get bothered by him and he gets more excited. I will separate them and put a leash on Maverick and then take for walk and all is fine, then a few minutes later they are all calm hanging out together. He was very exuberant/aggressive when I would grab a toy to play or a treat. He would try and jump and grab it and sometimes bite down on my hand. He has become much better now and will listen to commands like easy and leave it and is very calm. I will now introduce a toy or treat with the easy command and let him grab toy/treat with my hand on it and make sure he does not bite down until my hand is free. He has been doing great walking on a leash, will come when called most of the time, sits on command for a treat and working on stay. He is very quiet all night in my game room, he does not chew on anything except his bones and toys. He will go for food and treat container if left out so secure those, but he is much better about that now too. I have been working to get him to allow me to rub all over his body to get used to that interaction. He used to not like it, but now he is starting to finally come to me, crash in my lap and let me rub his ears, feet, head, belly, etc. Maverick is eager to learn, you can see it in his responses. It will just take some patience and love and he will end up being a great dog. I've seen dogs like this before and after some proper training and love they end up being exceptional family pets. He is just full of energy right now, just learning all his puppy commands and such at 1yr and about 75lbs. Makes it tough for small children right now, until he settles down and becomes a bit more calm. Maverick is a beautiful big boy just looking for a furever home to give him the steady love and training he needs. He will repay you with big kisses and lots of love.
