About CHARLIE Playful*Sweet*

Lab / American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

It's gnarly that CHARLIE (#A1943674) has spent so much time in the shelter. He first entered the East Valley Animal Shelter in early July 2020, he was adopted for a brief time, and returned for being 'hyper.' Was he hyper or just happy to be free? One shelter employee, who spent some time with CHARLIE, noted, 'He got one bout of zoomies but calmed down quickly after that. Did not want to go back to his kennel and pulled against me a little, but started moving with a nudge and didn't display any negative behavior otherwise.' Here are additional notes from shelter employees: 'ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Date of Interaction: 9/10/2020 CHARLIE (#A1943674) Charlie was a little excited at the door but he was easy to loop and pulled a little on the way to the yard . He has a mostly calm demeanor in the yard . He will run after a ball but doesn't bring it back. I tried to make him more active by running around, it did he chased me around the yard but he gets very mouthy when he is playing he grabbed my pants and treat bag in a playful way but I could see it possibly escalating. I corrected him and just started walking in he was fine' 'ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Date of Interaction: 8/21/2020 Animals: CHARLIE (#A1943674) Continuation of previous note . When I finally got him to the yard he was still very nervous he did eventually become relaxed he knows sit and was very friendly. We put him back in a Kennal near the front and the next day I took him out for playgroup and he walked straight to the yard with no issues' 'ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Date of Interaction: 8/21/2020 Animals: CHARLIE (#A1943674) Easy in and out but he was very fearful and stopped a few times on the way to the yard' 'PLAY GROUP (Sat, Aug 22, 2020 12:16 PM) quiet on intros. Slight interest. Had one burst of zoomies with another dog then explored the yard' 'BEHAVIORAL, GOOD BEHAV (Tue, Aug 18, 2020 1:22 PM) Charlie was easy to leash. Initially he pulled hard, but once we rounded the corner and got to the section of kennels where dogs were on both sides of us, he pancaked on the floor and stopped. I was able to coax him another 5 yards by crouching and using baby talk. I decided to suitcase walk him through the rest of the section to help cut down on his stress and of the other kenneled dogs barking at him. Once the walkway opened up to a quieter area, he walked noramlly [sic] again. He was eager to run around the yard. He immediatly [sic] urinated and defecated. He seems to enjoy being pet but the initial aproach [sic] of a hand illicits [sic] a fear response (squinting eyes, lowering head, tail tuck). But he had no qualms about sitting next to me. He comes when you call his name. He had little interest in the dog barking at him from the other side of the fence. After about 20 minutes in the yard, he began nuzzling and lifting up my elbow to get me to pet him some more. Easy to releash. Had the same issue with walking him back to his kennel.' It seems obvious that 4-year-old CHARLIE is nervous being in the shelter, but relishes his time outside the kennel. He would probably be a wonderful companion for a family that enjoys outdoor activities and will give him indoor privileges so he can snuggle with the ones he will love. WHAT SOMEONE AT THE SHELTER SAYS ABOUT HIM 'I love Charlie! He is always standing quietly with whole body wiggling at the front of his kennel and so happy to see you. He takes treats very nicely and is a very happy boy. I hope someone can take him home, so he can get into a routine & find some balance. He will do much better with some consistency! Such a doll!!'
