NO OUT OF STATE APPLICANTS, Please. Dixie is a one year old , small (around 24 lbs) Shih Tzu -terrier mix (NOT hypoallergic, she does shed some) , who is both sweet and very cute. Since the time we got her she has spent 3 weeks in the foster home and is very much loved by everybody: dogs, cats and of course humans. Dixie plays well with other pets, is housetrained, uses doggie door, walks well on a leash and never chewed on anything besides her toys and bones. She loves to be around us and prefers to sleep in our bed , however, it's not always been like this: We do believe that Dixie had a difficult start in life. She was adopted from Pregnant Dog Rescue as a puppy and later was returned after the family kept her for a year because 'they could no longer keep her'. We have reasons to believe, based on our observations, that the dog has been mistreated and maybe even physically abused. This made Dixie very shy with strangers, to the point that she would try to bite then run away and hide from somebody whom he doesn't know. For us, it took one day for her to get used to us and less than a week for her to fell in love with us - these days she wouldn't leave my side as I work from home , sleeping quietly by my side. But it takes time and patience to get there. She is not , by any means, an aggressive dog, but she will snap out of fear and always be wary of strangers in our opinion , including groomers and vets. It took me some time to get her to trust me enough to give her a haircut , but once she understood that it doesn't hurt, it was easy. For this reason we would not be comfortable placing Dixie in a family with children or her being your first dog- she does require an experienced owner who knows how to handle shy dogs. It is also preferable for her to have a stay at home owner, as well as a company of other pets. She isn't a runner , so even though she likes to explore outdoors , she can make a good apartment dog as long as she is being walked very regularly. Please consider all the above carefully to see if Dixie is a suitable dog for you and don't get too tempted by her looks: while she is very cute and a good dog, she needs a special environment to become a great dog she is meant to be. The adoption fee is $375. More pictures of Dixie can be found here (she looks much better with her new haircut!): https://photos.app.goo.gl/H1iUEc9KrheQRybaA
