About Nessie

Adoption Fee: $200
Mastiff
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

This pretty girl is Nessie. She is a 110 pound English Mastiff who was born March 1st 2014. Nessie has personality plus and will actually carry on a conversation with you. She loves to give kisses and receive belly rubs. Nessie is good with other dogs but is also ok being an only dog, she cares more about her people than anything else. Nessie is very affectionate and cuddly. Nessie was purchased as a puppy from a breeder. She has had good vet care all of her life. Nessie became ill and stopped eating and was vomiting and had diarrhea. Unfortunately it took three vets and all the money her owner had to make a diagnosis. By that time she was in crisis and hospitalized at an emergency vet. Nessie had low sodium levels, high potassium levels, a really low heart rate and very low blood pressure. Nessie's mom didn't surrendered her to us because she didn't want her, she surrendered Nessie so we could save her life. She loved Nessie very much, she just could not afford to care for her and has many other animals to care for. Nessie has Addison's disease and it had not been diagnosed. As soon as Nessie received the correct treatment she was quick to bounce back to a normal happy girl. Nessie's adrenal glands don't produce the Cortisol they need to which caused Nessie's Addison's disease. The adrenal glands may be tiny but they have a big job. The Cortisol they produce helps regulate blood pressure, metabolism, blood sugar, appetite, and the production of white and red blood cells. Nessie gets a Zycortal injection once a month to replace the Cortisol and takes a tiny amount of prednisone every day. She also takes a drug called Prion. The other meds she is on make her incontinent. With Prion Nessie has no issues. Like most giant breed dogs Nessie isn't cheap. At our vet her Zycortal injection costs $91 every month. Her Prion costs $52 every month. Her Prednisone is less than $4. Nessie is looking for a forever home that can both love her and afford her. Nessie also had a sore on her back left leg when she was surrendered. Again, this was misdiagnosed and not treated correctly by her previous vets. It's a lick granuloma and was infected. We did biopsies and figured out which antibiotics Nessie needed to clear the infection. She was on several months of antibiotics and then we did another biopsy, the infection is now gone. There is some scar tissue on her leg and sometimes she will start to chew on it. We put a soft cone on her to prevent this. Nessie is a good girl and has nice manners. She loves to go for car rides and walks. Because having a giant breed dog is like living with a small pony Nessie requires a fenced yard so she has room to run and play safely. Nessie wants to be wherever her people are and does take up some real estate. A tiny house or apartment is not a good fit for her. Nessie will sleep in a dog bed or in bed with her people. When her foster parents are at work Nessie is loose in their home. Nessie is housetrained, up to date on vaccinations, spayed, heartworm tested and microchipped.
