About Gilligan

Adoption Fee: $500
Great Dane
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

The name 'Gilligan' is Celtic and means 'small boy.' Well, at 34' tall our Gilligan surely doesn't fit that description but he DOES take after his goofy namesake from the TV show 'Gilligan's Island!' Think derpy wave and a goofy smile - that's Gilligan! Gilligan is 3-4 year old male merle great dane. He originally came to LFAR as a stray in 2019. Since then, he was adopted and living with a family, but they've had life changes causing Gilligan to no longer fit with their family. He also got a little tubby in his former home so he's been in body boot camp at his foster home! Hello summer beach body! Gilligan is a very sweet love bug of a boy who wants nothing more than to give you a giant lean while you rub and love on him. He almost always has his tongue hanging out of his mouth with a huge grin and a happy, wagging tail. Gilligan's ideal adopter is someone who is committed to communication with their dog and practices training routines daily. Even small things like being asked to sit/down before walking through a door or waiting before eating his food are all huge reinforcers of good manners that he thrives with. He has had bad experiences using electric shock collars and other negative methods. Luckily, Gilligan is very receptive to training using positive reinforcement including praise, treats, and toys. He has beautiful house manners as long as he is reminded to use them (silly boy!) He is a typical 'teenage' male Dane and REQUIRES A DANE EXPERIENCED adopter. Gilligan is ok with other dogs in the home but honestly would do best either as the only pup or with another calm, easy going (maybe older?) dog. High energy, in-your-face kind of dogs make him nervous. He gets pretty attached to his person and gets pouty when other dogs cut in on his affection. Kitty cats are perfectly fine though! Gilligan became very anxious with small children in his previous home. For that reason, NO KIDS UNDER 12 YRS OLD. An overall quiet household without a lot of hustle and bustle would suit him best. Gill does very, very well with routine. He is crated at night and when his foster mom is not home. He has a history of chewing a few things he shouldn't so A CRATE IS A MUST. But he loves his crate and will happily relax in it with his favorite bed. Gilligan is house trained, crate trained, neutered, up to date on all vaccinations and prevention, and microchipped. He also knows basic obedience including sit, down, stay, and working on place. Gill really deserves a forever family who will love him, train him, spoil him, and respect him. Forever. He's currently being fostered in the Roanoke VA area. We do adopt out of state but require adopters to travel to the foster home to pick up. You can see more pics & video on our Facebook pg, Lucky Farms Animal Rescue. His adoption fee is $500.
