About Maggie

Adoption Fee: $40
Treeing Walker Coonhound mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Where to start'| first off, Maggie will be an amazing dog under the right circumstances. She is a 7 year old female (fixed) tree-walking coon hound. Maggie would be a good addition to any family that may have older kids or somewhere with a fenced in yard. We rescued her from a shelter up in Saulte Ste Marie, Michigan in 2015, when she was about 2. At that time, she was more scared of men and would flinch when you put your hand near her. We were told she was abused by her previous owners, causing non-aggressive food insecurities (obsession to sniff out and seek food) and severe separation anxiety. With lots of love and hard work, my wife and I were able to get her crate-trained (per the shelter's request) and comfortable with people. You see, the major problem that we are having with Maggie is due to food allergies. She is allergic to grain and chicken, which is in the majority of dog foods, treats, and meds. This causes her to turn bright pink and itchy (mainly on her belly area, between her toes, and up her chest and neck). Shortly after, she gets a smelly yeast infection in her ears, caused by the allergy. I tried treating it myself but I always end up having to take her into the vet for Prednisone and an antibiotic. She is house trained, however, a side effect of these drugs make her incontinent (only during the treatment). Add in our lack of a backyard and it sucks. My wife and I recently added to our family and now have a one year old daughter. Unfortunately, we did not realize Maggie is not fond of small children and will growl anytime my daughter gets near. Due to our fear of her hurting our daughter, she now spends most her time in the basement. Add in the allergies and it becomes next to impossible with a small child for her not keep getting forbidden food. We do not feel that putting her in the basement is a fair life for a dog. We love her but, we understand that our current circumstances are not fair to her and would like the last 4-5 years of her life to be good ones. Therefore, we are seeking a home that's more suitable for Maggie. Maggie is happiest when she's outside running around, laying in the sun, or going for walks. She's not much of a barker, but will howl if asked to go for a walk. She's very low maintenance, potty trained, will listen to basic commands like sit, wait, and shake. She can be very shy, but as long as you're kind, she will warm up to you very quickly. This is not something I want to be posting. But we cannot provide a good enough home for her and hope people will not judge is for this. So if you know anyone who might be the right fit for her, please let me know.
