NOVA@BROOKLYN ACC Nova ID#94247, 5 years old, 50 lbs (Formerly known as Sasha 77677) Came into shelter as a Owner Surrender Medium Mixed Breed, BRINDLE/WHITE spayed female Nova was adopted in October of 2019, but became too much for her family to handle. She was originally evaluated with a Level 1 behavior rating, but is now New Hope Only. She did have a bite incident with the resident small dog in the home. Based on her owner profile, she was reported to growl at the child in the home so she is fearful with the potential for defensive aggression. She has dental disease, but is otherwise healthy. While Nova has displayed social behaviors with human handlers/caretakers here at the Care Centers, she has displayed a high level of anxiety during her interactions. She would be engaged with handlers during training, play, or other interactions, but her anxiety would begin to increase and she is then unable to focus and walk away. During her stay, Nova has begun to show high levels of anxiety in her kennel (racing back and forth in the kennel, hyper salivating, heavily panting, throwing herself into the kennel door when other dogs or handlers pass), in conjunction with kennel reactivity- when passing neighboring dogs upon being returned to her kennel, Nova growls, hard barks, and pulls towards the other kennels. Due to Nova's high level of anxiety coupled with her fearful defensive behaviors (growled and snarled at a child when uncomfortable) and bite history to a smaller dog, the Behavior Department feels that she would best be set up to succeed with an experienced adult-only rescue partner where she can have time to decompress in a home environment and receive dog socialization training. A staff member writes: When I first met Nova, I could just tell this girl knew her stuff! We were hanging out off-leash and as soon as I offered her treats she was so attentive and ready to please. She sat right at my feet and as I handed her a treat she gave me a solid high-five. She is a loving lady who appreciates attention but can also spend some time on her own. Her previous owner says 'Nova loves to be outside and run circles in the grass. She likes to play with stuffed toys and balls. She also loves to fetch and tug.' The behavior team recommends Nova be a single pet in an adult-only environment. Let this girl show you her skills. She would make an out of this world's best friend.
