About Apple

Australian Shepherd mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

COURTESY LISTING: AT RISK FOR EUTHANASIA: Name: Apple ID#: 674372 Breed: Australian Shepherd Age: 2 years, 6 months Sex: Female Weight: 56lbs This girl came into our care on 6/30/2020 as an owner relinquish due to the owner moving to Oceanside about a year ago after living on a 20 acre farm in TN. Apple was a sheepherder on the farm and owner thinks she is bored now without sheep to herd. Has nipped at the neighbor's kids a few times and owner is concerned about getting on the neighbor's bad side. Apple met kids aged 5 to 10 yr between owner's kids and neighbor's kids. Owner's 5yr will tug and rough play with Apple, which Apple does not like, she will growl/turn/air snap (has happened twice). Otherwise is playful and friendly with the kids, will sleep in bed with them. Has 'nipped' the neighbor's kids 3 times when they approach, feels like a pinch, but no broken skin. Owner said it usually takes 3 to 4 visits for Apple to get used to someone and she did eventually get used to the kids. When she arrived owner was not able to put Apple into a crate for retrieval. Apple exhibited heavy panting, stiff, kept turning and pushing away. Suggested attaching to carabineer, which owner did. Owner was still standing nearby when Staff approached Apple to retrieve. Apple growled briefly when I approached, Staff crouched down turned aside, Apple approached and sniffed briefly. Allowed some pets on rear then growled again. Owner spoke to Apple to calm her down. Staff retrieved the leash and walked to admissions. Apple walked well, braked a few times to pull in a different direction. In admissions, Apple was hyper salivating, panting, ears up, stiff. Apple stood still and tolerated pets. Apple sat down while being touched. Panting stopped when touching closer to neck or head, turned head slightly but remained. Not food motivated. Due to reports of snapping during restraint, muzzled before treatments. Apple sniffed the muzzle and allowed it to be put on with no issue while sitting. Once muzzled Apple started to sink slightly, tolerated restraint, did not react to treatments until strongid. Pulled back and turned head aside when feeding strongid. Once restraint was eased, Apple pawed at muzzle, which I removed. Recovered well, moved to door, I took the leash and we walked to kennel. Entered kennel on her own..
