About McGruff

Chihuahua / Norwich Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

McGruff got his name honestly because his wiry hair makes his hair feel 'ruff.' What a funny mix this stately gentleman is! We aren't positive of the Portuguese Podengo (this site doesn't have the Portuguese Podengo so we chose Norwich Terrier - also wirehaired) but that is the closest we can come in our guesses. No matter what his true mix (purebred mutt) he is going to make a great companion in the right home. He doesn't shed a lot and his fur could use an occasional brushing but he is NOT a fan of a brush near his face, and that would probably be the Chihuahua coming through. His future people will need to be firm with that side of him to keep him being a great dog. McGruff is not a spring chick but not a senior either. The shelter had him at three years old but we feel he is more likely around six or seven years old. He is old enough that what you see is what you get - no puppy behaviors to deal with. When we asked him what his perfect people would be like he told us he would like a quiet home with mature people that allow him on the furniture and take him on occasional walks. He doesn't want a lot of noisy children around either. He also said he doesn't mind earning his keep by alerting you to noises that are of concern to him but he promises he won't be a big barker, and we believe him because he's not been a big barker in his foster home. McGruff gets along well with other dogs but isn't too excited about large dogs. Cats are fine by him too. We are looking for a home for him where any children are at least 12 years old as he just doesn't like too much unpredictable activity. If you would like to meet and potentially adopt McGruff read on or go directly to the adoption process page of our website - throwmeabonedogrescue.org. All potential adopters are expected to complete an application and provide pictures of their yard, patio, and/or balcony making sure we can see the fence line and/or railing. The application can be completed and submitted from our website - throwmeabonedogrescue.org - the link is found of the Adoption Process page. Applications will be reviewed for approval before setting an appointment to come meet and possibly adopt the dog of interest. In addition, those who live in a rental property are expected to provide proof that they are allowed to have a dog where they live. Each of our rescued dogs has been de-wormed if necessary, de-flea'd (with topical treatment if old enough, and by medicated bath if too young), spayed/neutered, microchipped, is up to date on shots, and has been fully examined by a veterinarian. In addition, each adopted dog comes with a starter baggie of the food it has been eating, a few treats for training purposes, a rawhide chew, a lead and collar, and a folder containing pertinent records.
