About Percy

Adoption Fee: $10.00
Maine Coon / Domestic Cat
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

Percy was living in the abandoned house (just concreter walls and slab with no roof or windows) at the end of my road. The house was set back in a large field next to the railroad tracks. He took a few days to let me get close enough to pet him, but he was so hungry he just couldn't resist. I was able to pick him up and place him in a cat carrier to take him to the vet to be neutered. He was vaccinated and neutered, with no microchip found. I have been feeding this sweet boy for the last 2 years. Fall of 2018, they bulldozed the house and cleared the entire field where he was living. One night it was really cold, and I went to the field to feed him, he wouldn't eat and kept laying down at my feet. It was hard for me to see, but it looked like his coat was wet on his chest area. I felt it and my hand was covered in blood. I managed to get him into a cat carrier and carried him home. The only room I had left open in my house was the bathroom, so I set him up in there. I examined his neck and quickly found what the problem was, a HUGE abscess had formed under his jaw. The pressure from me pulling his neck up to get a better look caused huge amounts of blood and pus to come out. We cleaned the area the best we could, and I took him in to the vet for antibiotics. He stayed in my bathroom for 2 weeks, letting us clean the wound each evening, never once biting or clawing either of us. Once his wound was healed, he was determined to go back outside. I carried him back down to the field and let him go. Another year passed with us feeding him like clockwork every evening. The heat, bugs, and general environment of the field began wearing him down. His once shiny beautiful coat became matted and his nose was so swollen from the mosquitoes that it oozed, crusting over. This caused him to lose all the pigment in his nose. One night he did not come for dinner, so I knew something was wrong. The next night I went, and he was there waiting on me, but he was injured. His left front paw was triple the size of the other one. Back to the bathroom we went, then to the vet. The vet found a large laceration on the bottom of his pad, he prescribed antibiotics and told me to clean it twice a day. I wanted to get him adopted and asked the vet to do an adoption ready examination with all vaccinations, which he did. He did find his paws to have hard growths on the pads (almost like corns), saying he has only seen this once on a dog and the dog was a victim of a house fire. I was shocked when the vet reported him to be around 9 years old! He has been at my house since November, with no desire to leave this time. He has not been able to cohabitate with my own feline family as he growls and hides his head whenever he sees another cat. My landlord has refused to renew my lease and will not work with me on extending my time here for another month. I cannot take him with me as we are moving into our RV (and I have 7 cats of my own). He is super loving and deserves to have a safe home. Willing to meet out of state adopter if needed.
