[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] Peanut was seen by a neurologist a few weeks ago. He has weakness and incoordination in his back legs, which could likely be due to chronic intervertebral disc disease; he also has a shifting leg lameness in his front legs that could be due to arthritis or other chronic intervertebral disc disease. Peanut's incontinence is likely due to a chronic spinal cord issue in the middle of his back that delays the signals passing from the bladder and rectum to the brain, which causes 'surprise' incontinence. Peanut knows he has to go to the bathroom. However, by the time he realizes it, reflexes have already taken over, and he sometimes has accidents. Things that can help with the incontinence are keeping his stools firm by including fiber such as canned pumpkin in his diet and taking him out for frequent potty breaks, using potty pads near exit doors and using diapers. Peanut may also have some canine cognitive dysfunction (dementia) or other brain issue that is contributing to his incontinence. He also appears to have some trouble seeing out of his left eye, which could be due to an ocular issue. However, it could potentially be a result of a previous stroke, a tumor, or other unknown brain issue. Peanut displays some behavior that could be indictors of senility. He's been started on Selegiline to see if this helps at all. This medication can take some time to take effect. He's also on Gabapentin to help with any discomfort in his neck or back although he doesn't appear to be in any pain, the Gabapentin may also help alleviate some symptoms of the dementia, overall Peanut is not in pain and his quality of life is not significantly impacted by his incontinence. He is a 10-year-old Norfolk Terrier/Beagle mix. We rescued him from a situation of LONG term (YEARS of) neglect, he needs a home where the rest of his life can be the best of his life, he's rightfully a little bit cautious, but he's obedient, loyal, friendly, good-natured, intelligent, even-tempered, lovable, and gentle. He's HW+ but his adoption fee will cover treatment. Please give Peanut a home in which to live out his golden years, he still has so much love to give, please help this special dog. We are also seeking donations for his care, thank you. Peanut's adoption fee will be reduced because Pooch Savers Rescue has been blessed to receive a grant from the Petfinder Foundation.
