This 4-year old, 65-pound super-mutt male is located in Grantham, NH. According to DNA tests he is 31.5% Chow-Chow and an eclectic mix of wonder. He is neutered, fully housebroken, and up-to-date on shots. If you are looking for a loyal, non-hyper, non-clingy dog who just wants to chill out with you, Charlie is for you! Charlie is a really good boy! He is respectful of the home and not destructive at all. He is crate trained and often puts himself there when he wants to rest. He is fine being left home alone, in or out of his crate. He knows 'sit, 'come,' and 'down' (to get off the couch or bed), 'leave it' and almost always comes when called. Charlie absolutely loves going to dog boarding and though he enjoys car rides, his tummy will get upset on winding roads. He is a good walker, too, and does very well on a leash. Sometimes he takes a good run around his invisible fenced yard, but mostly he has pretty low energy. During the day, he can usually be found catching some zzzz's on the couch, on a bed, or in his crate. Any comfy spot will do! So why does this dream dog need a new home? Charlie is being rehomed because he bit an 11-year old visitor in March of this year. Here's what happened: Charlie was doing his favorite activity (sleeping) in a semi-dark room when a friend's daughter went in search of him for a snuggle. This startled Charlie awake, and he bit her once, quickly, on the face requiring stitches. (The girl is OK.) The owners don't blame Charlie because it was dark and the girl was told not to go into the room but did so anyway. While he can take a fair amount of roughness from his own young human siblings, the owners feel he needs a home without kids since he is an easily startled dog. Charlie is very good with people, just shy with strangers at first. He will greet guests by barking when they arrive but does warm up. If there are many guests, he'll often retreat on his own to a bedroom or his crate, returning eventually to be around people. He never jumps on people, though he will 'paw' you gently to get more petting. He does enjoy a good belly rub or scratch behind the ears, from his humans or humans that he knows/has warmed up to. If you live alone and want a sense of security, Charlie will let you know when someone is walking by outside. Charlie's ideal family is one with low-key adults (low-key teens are ok) who don't want a lap dog. No cats. A family that is experienced with more aloof dog breeds, such as huskies or chows, would be great. The family will understand the following: he does not appreciate being startled or backed into a corner; strangers must respect boundaries and let him approach first; and let him keep his distance from children.
