About Rocco

American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

We pulled this spunky senior from Downey shelter back in November (he'd been there since August). By that time we knew Rocco well, so when we got his 48-hour notice, we rescued him. When you imagine a 10 year-old owner surrender with a cataract, you're liable to picture a senior sleeping in the sun. But Rocco's special. He is energetic and enthusiastic with a touch of ADD. He bounces around, greets everyone individually, and when he licks your face his teeth often make contact, which can be disconcerting to the uninitiated. He's a barrel-chested 68 lbs and he zigzags on leash. He's like a BB in a can. People aren't expecting it. I know. It sounds like I'm talking you out of him. So yesterday I went and got him out of boarding and took him home for the afternoon. He immediately jumped into the pool and swam around. Then he got out and sniffed every inch of the backyard. Every. Inch. He wandered around for a full hour, smelling the smells, taking some water, and looking up at the birds in the trees. It was like he was seeing life anew. After an hour and a half of swimming and exploring, Rocco laid in the sun to dry off. I sat down next to him. He put his head in my lap and looked at me. I got: 'I just need to be engaged, Jill. My brain needs to work. I'm a good boy!' Then he fell asleep. Who knew? A senior, sleeping in the sun! I've known Rocco now for 10 months and I have never seen him so relaxed and happy. I know a high-energy senior dog is usually an oxymoron, but Rocco is a walking contradiction. Please consider adopting this boy. He will delight and surprise you. You both deserve it.
