About Groot

German Shepherd / Beagle
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Meet Groot (the middle dog in this picture)! He is an 18 month old shepherd/beagle mix. DNA also shows red fox lab and collie. We are looking for a home due to my (owner) terminal illness. ¶ Groot will need an owner that is patient and present. Groot did have separation anxiety when he found us, so there will be a transition period where he *will* require more support. He is crate trained. Groot is good with kids, dogs, cats/kittens and basically any animal he believes is part of the family. He would do well as your ride-or-die companion or in a home with a slightly older dog to learn with. A fenced in yard is preferred or if on a farm he will will need to be given attention rather than ignored or just left to run all day. While he loves to run and play outside, he is a indoor lap dog at heart. Groot is afraid of the dark and must be inside at night. He loves to snuggle!! His favorite activity is to play any game for a bit and then settle in under our feet for a night of TV. While on a tie-out, Groot is easily scared of unfamiliar dogs and people. He does bark when people are near our property. But that is his job and his nature so this is not a fault. He has the bark of a german shepherd which means he will not be a good dog for someone who is away for large chunks of the day if living in an apartment or living in a heavily populated area. I did try to train him as a working support dog but he does not do well with pressure based tasks (like bracing or physical support) because his personality tells him to submit. He does do well with 'find me' tasks and tracking as most beagles do. Once he feels secure, he is able to go into stores, wearing a harness, leash and soft muzzle. He also loves his support harness as it makes him feel secure. He loves learning new tasks and is easily the smartest dog I have ever worked with. Vet references WILL be required; with proper reference, there is no fee to adopt. As I am in the researching stages of options for him, I will have questions and need verification that your home will be best for him. Groot was scheduled to be neutered earlier this year but due to COVID19 schedule, that was postponed. He is now scheduled to be neutered in July. Future pictures/videos, once he is placed, for my daughter are a plus as going through this situation is difficult and anything we can do to make this situation easier for her, we will do. Anyone inquiring about the terrier/chi mix- He is 18 years old and we have found a suitable place for him.
