About Portia (west)

Hi, my name is PORTIA - ID#A4353611. I am a spayed female, brindle and white American Pit Bull Terrier, and I weigh about 47 lbs. The shelter staff think I am about 5 years old, and I have been at the shelter since December 10, 2019. Recommend only dog placement and older children; recommend experienced handler who is willing to seek non-punishment based training/behavior assistance in home setting; this dog should be the only pet in the home (no dogs, no cats, no bunnies, etc.). Here are some recent notes from volunteers who spent time with Portia: 5/4/2020 ENRICHMENT Aroused in kennel, once out jumping up on leash. Once out of building walked better. Canine was mouthy in yard but able to re-direct with treats. Affiliative with handler. Was calmer upon return. 5/7/2020 OBSERVATION Pushy at the kennel door; when walking to play yard Portia would jump up on handler almost up to her face and was mouthy. When in yard Portia would continously jump up onto handlers lap. Easy redirected with food and caught onto the focus exercise. Knows sit. Settled after a few reps of exercise and handler was able to pet without Portia becoming aroused. Would not recommend a house hold with small children. Easy kennel return. 5/12/2020 ENRICHMENT Excited in kennel, once out arousal increases slightly. Pulls on leash but affiliaitve with handler. Ran around yard, and stayed closed to handler throughout. Spent an hour in the office and given enrichment. 5/15/2020 OBSERVATION Dog was friendly and solicited attention while in the kennel. 5/17/2020 ENRICHMENT Excited and aroused in kennel, pushed to exit. Spent time in yard and canine walked near handlers side. After yard time Portia spent time in office. Anxious initially but settled with time and took a nap.
