About Stormy

Stormy is a 10 or 11 year old Dachsund who came to us a little over a year ago when her Mom (my mother in law) was unable to take care of her anymore. She is used to living in a quiet home with one person (she was extremely attached to Mom) and there was an adjustment period of several months when she came to live with me and my husband. Now she has attached herself to my husband although she does tolerate me :) Also, she was never really exposed to children so she does not care for them. She also does not seem to care for other dogs or cats. She is very smart. When she came to us, she did not know how to sit but quickly learned. She is now able to 'sit' and 'stay'. I tried to teach her how to fetch but she gets very protective of what she believes to be hers (a ball, for instance) and she will snap at you if you get too close to it. Also, you cannot go near her food while she is eating. But she is very cooperative when it comes to bathing, brushing, cleaning her ears, filing her nails, etc. She is also very good with vet and groomer. She likes to be very near the person she is attached to, and she will drag her bed or blanket over to wherever my husband is. She gets very upset when he leaves the house and will cry, howl and sit by the door until he returns. In the past several months, she has fallen into the unfortunate habit of chewing up her feet and legs. She has been seen by a vet and mites, ticks and fleas were ruled out. It is believed to be a nervous condition and we are unsure how to handle it. Under our care, she has been spayed and is current with all of her shots. We are getting ready to retire at the end of June and we are moving out of the country. We need to find a home for Stormy before we go. I believe she will make a great companion for a single, patient person. Once she feels secure with you, she will be completely devoted.
