About Mercy

Adoption Fee: 500
Saint Bernard
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Mercy is a 3 year old, Rough Coated, 125 pound, MALE Saint Bernard who truly is a sweet boy! Mercy needs a home with no children under 16 and would do best with other even tempered dogs. Name: Mercy Breed: Saint Bernard, Age: 3 Sex: Male, Weight: 125 Location: Oklahoma City, OK Adoption Available NATIONWIDE with Delivery! Good with cats & dogs! No kids! Mercy has been fabulous since we took him in! He has been handled by multiple people and met a lot of strangers since we have had him. Today we tested him with 4 different handlers including myself, he met a female, leery of big dogs, as well and even the trainers grown son. He approached every one of them with confidence and literally picked up their hands for petting and affection. We tested allowing them to approach him fast and slow and again he did amazing. All 3 handlers walked him and he allowed them to take control. He took guidance and command from everyone. He does need to continue working on taking quicker command when there is stimuli (distractions). He was extremely quick to learn when we showed him new things. We saw some resource guarding of food when we first brought him in. So we tested his resource guarding of food with another dog and within minutes he did amazing. He showed zero issues with toys as well. When harnessed he tends to pull but we found he did amazing on the slip lead leash and took directions very well. Mercy is crate and potty trained, knows the commands sit, down, wait, stay and walks well on slip lead leash but he needs clear directions given. Mercy is muzzle trained with a nylon open ended muzzle and we are working on training him to the cage muzzle. We tested him through the fence at his training facility with multiple dogs of all sizes and he did amazing. Then he had a play date with my pack of 6 female and males, he had a great time! When he met Diesel, our 10 month old male, he did get a little agitated with Diesel's hyper puppy excitement. Mercy will need someone to continue positive reinforcement training with the muzzle and his speed of basic commands when distractions are present. He also needs continued socialization in the home and out of the home in public, so not to regress in his fear of new people and new environments. We suspect that once he settles in to his new home that with the proper guidance and positive reinforcement, his fears will fade. We will continue working with him until his home is picked as well. Mercy came in as a behavioral case because after living in 2 different homes he showed a bad fear aggression with young kids. He lunged & snapped at several children, but never made contact. He also reacted very guarded around highly anxious or hyper people and had some mild stranger anxiety. He DOES NOT have a bite history, because we were lucky enough to get him before it could happen! Unfortunately, he was tortured by young children in his first home by teasing, throwing rocks and poking him with sticks. His reaction to when a small child is near is that he will not take his eyes off of them and tracks their every move. Thus he CANNOT be in any home with small children under 16. We did work with desensitization around a 10 year old and he made friends with him very quickly. Mercy needs to be shown that children are not a threat and continue working on this. He will need continued desensitization in public places where children can be present. He will need a strong, experienced owner that will continue working with him to settle his fears and show him that he is finally safe, loved and respected. Mercy has been a joy for us to have, but unfortunately has spent most of his time in boarding due to the lack of foster homes that can help us with a dog with behavioral problems. I visit him a few times a week to walk, train and take him out for the day. He also has visited my home for several play dates after his training sessions! He has been amazing with my entire pack! My pack consists of 2 smaller males 40-60 pounds, 1 smaller female Dalmatian and 2 female Saints. He did incredible with all of them and when my bossy female Sadee growled he did not react at all. He also did great with my 20 pound Bengal cat! We believe that he would do best with large females or smaller males dogs that are more even tempered, not super hyper. He also shared the water bowls and took treats/reward along side my pack with no sign of food issues. The hyper puppy energy of meeting Diesel agitated him but he did great with the smaller energetic males and females in my home. We will continue play dates with him until his forever family is found. Mercy truly deserves a forever family that will truly be his last! He has been evaluated by our behaviorist and cleared after his last training session. Mercy is still a young vibrant teenage puppy and should continue to gain some weight to fill out his tall and lean body.
