About Duke

Adoption Fee: $400
Great Dane
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

The Duke, aka Mr. Eyebrows and an Olympic class cuddler, is ready for his forever home! Duke is a 5-year-old Great Dane. He weighs around 140 pounds and is a very tall boy. He is up to date on all vaccines as well as heartworm and flea and tick preventative. Duke is allergic to chicken. Owners will need to read labels on dog food and treats. Duke came to Lucky Farms from a loving family. However, when a baby arrived, Duke did not adjust well; the baby made him nervous. From experiences in foster care, Duke does well with teenagers 15 yrs+, but he is not a good fit for a home with young children. He is also not a good fit for a home with small dogs. A larger, confident dog should be fine. A meet & greet will be required. However, Duke would also be happy as an only dog. Duke loves to snuggle and rest his head on your lap'|or on your shoulder if you're sitting down. He may have some sugar on his muzzle, but this boy loves to play catch, tug, and search for hidden treats around the house. He can sit, shake, lay down, stay, and come. He does great in the car and is always up for a ride. Duke has a lot of personality that he shows through sound: sounds of excitement, contentment, exasperation, and fear. When he gets to sit on the couch and cuddle, he lets out the funniest moans! He will also be sure to let you know when the mailman is here. He is very observant of his kingdom. He does great with guests in the home or visiting other people's houses. He is still learning some leash skills. However, his biggest training goal is seeing people while on a leash walking around the neighborhood. He is scared of people, especially joggers, we see on walks and will bark and sometimes growl if they try and get closer. His foster mom has been walking him twice a day. At first, he would bark at anyone in eye distance. Then, he would only bark if people were within half a block from us. Now, he only struggles with people walking or jogging towards us. His foster mom will take him in the grass a few feet away and give him something to smell or investigate. The barking is fading. He makes improvement every week. However, it would be reasonable to expect him to backtrack some after adoption while he is adjusting to his new family, environment, and expectations. His second training goal is separation anxiety. He does bark when left alone, although not constantly. He is learning that his family will come home; however, due to the current situation, his foster family has not been able to do as much training on this goal as usual. Duke could easily adjust to a home without a fence for owner(s) willing to continue his leash training described above. However, he is not well-suited for apartment living because he can be so vocal. Duke is an awesome dog, but if you don't believe his foster mom, take it from Honest Abe. The Duke has presidential approval as a top dog'|and tallest dog! Duke is currently being fostered in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While LFAR does adopt out of state, adopters will need to travel to Bowling Green to pick up the dog.
