About Dexter

Rottweiler
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Hi! My name is Dexter! I just turned 4 years old on 3/27/2020. I am looking for a new home, but not because I did anything wrong. I was adopted as a puppy from SSRR, and several months ago, my adoptive family decided they could no longer have dogs, so I got sent to SSRR and placed into a foster home. My foster mom loves me, but I would love to have a permanent home of my own, so she can continue to foster others. I'm a big boy I'm told, as I weigh about 100 lbs. I'm a mixed Rottie, whatever that means. My mom is Maggie Mae that had a litter of pups and I am one of them! I am very shy at first, and it takes me a while to really trust new people and some time to trust new dogs too. Foster mom was told I have always been timid. I have come to love my foster mom, even though I don't always like when she tries to love on me with hugs and kisses! I don't give kisses, so why should I have to put up with getting them?!? Sometimes I'll give her a low growl to tell her I've had enough, but I have never shown teeth or snapped at her. I just wouldn't do that! But because I like my personal space, my foster mom says I shouldn't go to a home with small children as they might bother me too much and not understand my boundaries. And besides, I could easily knock them over. Children over 10 would probably be fine. I am a very good boy and something called low maintenance, I'm told. You see, I don't bark much, I like just laying around and sleeping, and waiting for my foster mom to get home. I don't mess up anything while she's gone. I gave up chewing when I was a puppy! Well except when I first got to my foster moms house... she tried to gate me in the master bath, and when I heard her leaving I freaked out, and chewed my way out. So she didn't pull that nonsense again. I'm perfectly happy being next to her on the couch watching tv. And when she has to leave, she just pulls up the blinds that face the driveway so I can watch her leave and come home. When she gets home is about the only time I bark, because I'm super excited! And I bark at that big brown truck, as it is pretty scary. I'm housebroken, and I know to wait by the door to let me out. If you can't see me, I run to go find you and start acting funny. I'm very shy, and don't like to do my business in front of strangers, so I am good at holding it if I need to. I'm kind of a picky eater, but understandably, dog food doesn't taste very good! My foster mom mixes a little wet food in my dry kibble everyday, sometimes she gives me some shredded cheese or cooked chicken or vegetables mixed in, and I really love that! I grew up with dogs of all sizes, and currently live with 2 small dogs and one medium size dog. It took me a little while to warm up to them because I was scared after going on a long transport from TX to SC where I live now, and then being in a strange place. But now I will play with the 55 lb dog that's here, and even play with the little dogs once in a while. My foster mom thinks I would be ok with cats that are used to dogs. If they aren't good with dogs, well if the cat went and hid all day, fine, or if it ran away from me it would probably scare me more than anything. Really, I am content just laying on moms bed all day. So, just know I LOVE to sleep on the bed. But I don't kick or bother my foster mom at all. I just like to be there next to her. I'm TERRIFIED of the vacuum cleaner, and my foster mom still hasn't figured out how to make it better for me, but she's trying. I also don't care for loud noises, like gun shots, fireworks, but I don't need medication to calm me down, as long as my foster mom is near to keep me safe. My favorite activity is running on the 3 fenced acres of land I live on now. I stay fairly close to foster mom, but if I get too far away and she calls me, I come running towards her at full speed!!! She thinks I am going to run her over one day, but I know better and always turn at the last second. Won't you please consider giving me a forever home?
