About Maverick

Adoption Fee: $0
Doberman Pinscher
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Maverick is a very sweet boy! He's got a big friendly, goofy grin and short tail that 'wags' (wiggles) a lot. Maverick is good with other dogs, however we are recommending he go to a home where he is the only free roaming pet. Maverick does seem to have sore hips and may need to be on daily supplements for life. We also think he may be hard of hearing. He walks well on a leash. Per our trainer's recommendation he should be walked with a slip lead (not a leash that attaches to his collar). The slip lead should be secured behind his ears as opposed to his neck - this gives you more control without choking Maverick. Maverick does great on walks and is non-reactive to other animals and people during walks. Walks should be kept easy and short due to his hips. We believe Maverick may have been abused or had physical trauma. He air snaps like he is chasing a fly (he never snaps towards anyone). He wakes up startled sometimes, like he's having nightmares. He does not like other dogs to walk around him when he is laying down (we think he is scared and feels defenseless at that time). Maverick would need to be muzzled during normal appointments (vet, grooming, etc). He greeted the vet excitedly (even smiled!) and was very welcoming. However, once the exam started he got very uncomfortable. He seems to have extreme fear issues with his back legs/knees and behind being touched. Our vet does not believe it is pain related. He DOES allow his foster to touch him in these areas without issues. He needs time to trust the people in his life, to know he won't be hurt. His back legs are slightly deformed but does not really effect his mobility. He is not destructive and is potty trained. He is very calm and would rather snuggle with you than run around and be crazy. Maverick does have valley fever. This is not contagious, it is curable and we will provide the medication. Maverick is vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped. He will also go home with a collar and some of the food he is currently eating (to allow you to transition to your preferred brand). *Please note we require adoption applications to be completed prior to meet and greets and home visits prior to adoption. Meet and greets can count as the home visit and animals can be adopted at a successful meet and greet.*
