Hound is full of surprises! Although nervous upon first meet, he knows how to comfort people once he gets to know you AND has zoomies galore! Please help share Hound for a second chance. This is a truly awesome boy who should NOT be overlooked. He's a rockstar already! HOUND@BROOKLYN ACC Hound - 91261 - 3 years old, 54 lbs INTAKE DATE - 3/17/2010 A Staff Member Writes: I have found such comfort in Hound! Sometimes when a dog comes in to the shelter it takes time for them to open up and adjust. But when I took him out .... he made me feel more comfortable! I wasn't expecting it at all! When we entered the pens, I sat on the bench and he sat next to me. As he was leaning on me, he pressed his very wet nose into my forehead and put his paws on my shoulder ..... he gave me such a nice hug! It was almost like he knew I was having a bad day. After that, we started to play around and play fetch. He LOVES to run around with tennis balls and, man, when he gets the zoomies - it's a sight to see!!! So if you're interested in this sweet boy who seems to be not only a great, fun pet, but an excellent companion - come meet him and see for yourself! BEHAVIOR: SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment: 21-Mar-2020 BEHAVIOR: Summary: During his time in the assessment room, Hound appears immediately aroused (whining and panting). Hound begins to jump up high and slam his body into handlers, this behavior continues to intensify and Hound is unable to readily settle on his own. Handlers attempt to ignore Hound though he continues whining and panting and continues to make attempts to slam body into handlers as well as muzzle punch handler's knees/stomach. When handler moves Hound away, he continues to make strong and incessant attempts to jump up high towards handlers (face level). Because of Hound's high level of arousal coupled with handlers concern for rapid escalation upon further interaction or handling, he is not considered a safe or appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. DOG-DOG: Summary: Hound was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 3/18: When off leash at the Care Center, Hound is introduced to a novel female dog. He does not greet the female and becomes increasingly anxious as he paces the pens. Hound jumps on the gates and fence in an attempt to find an exit. 3/19: Hound continues to display anxious behaviors but briefly greets a novel female before continuing his pacing. FUN FACTS: INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake: 17-Mar-2020 Summary: Shy initially then began hard barking, growling, lunging. This is when he first came into the shelter , scared! MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial: 17-Mar-2020 Summary: Tense, allowed all handling IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 3/18: Hound was at the front of the kennel when a handler approached. He displayed a tense posture but began to give low tail wags when the handler removed his blocker and offered him treats. He took the treats with a soft mouth but retreated further into the kennel when the handler attempted to leash him. After two attempts with the use of treats, the handler was able to successfully leash him. Hound jumped out of the kennel and pulled hard outside. Once outside, Hound did not take treats and became increasingly anxious. He would pace the pen and jump on the gate in an attempt to seek an exit. 3/23: A handler reported that Hound was in his kennel loose and wiggly when approached. During the session he was loose and wiggly but while petting him around his ears he would freeze. Hound engaged in play and was returned back to his kennel with no issues. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only Recommendations:No children (under 13) Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments: No children (under 13): Due to the concerns observed in the care center, we feel as though Hound would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment. Place with a New Hope partner: Hound has displayed multiple concerns in the care center; he has been observed to become extremely aroused during interactions and is unable to readily settle. Hound has also been observed to freeze upon direct contact; on intake he was reported to hard bark, growl and lunge. We cannot be certain as to how these behaviors may translate into a new home environment though recommend exercising safe and appropriate management. Typical of being scared a t a shelter !
