He's a 7.5-year old, 84-pound mix located at Pope Memorial Human Society in Dover, NH. He is neutered and all his vaccines are current. Ratchet is so deeply loved, that he comes complete with his own personal behavior consultant, ready to work with his new family at no charge! This support will set him up for success in his new home. Ratchet can be reserved at first, but his playful and affectionate nature with shelter staff confirm that he is a wonderful happy boy! Please know that an adopter MUST allow Ratchet time to get to know his new family and surroundings. He will make someone a truly nice sidekick for taking drives, getting out in the fresh air, or watching TV. Once he opens up to people, Ratchet can go from aloof to affectionate in no time. Since he was a stray, we're not sure of his past except that he must have been an Olympic Swimmer. While waiting for his 'furever' home since the pandemic hit, staff have taken him for regular swim sessions at an indoor pool to keep his mad doggy paddle skills at peak performance. Dog lovers with pools or by the water are most welcome to apply! Ratchet's other pastimes include car rides, walks, and playing soccer. He's an energetic, easily motivated dog, and loves when new people offer toys or treats. Ratchet is very much a people dog once he attaches to someone, but he needs to be an only pet. Additionally, his love of treats and toys has sometimes led to resource guarding, so any children need to be dog-savvy and at least fourteen years old. Ratchet's adopter will need to work with him on guarding behavior. Part of that training is just earning his trust, and taking the time to build a positive relationship with him.
