About CARIN

Adoption Fee: 50
American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

We never thought we'd find ourselves on this side of such a heartbreaking situation... Carin came into our lives a little over 1 year ago after we adopted her from the Kokomo Humane Society (they know her as 'Luna'). Carin was surrendered by her owner when their landlord found out they had 3 dogs and weren't supposed to have any. She had not been properly socialized and was very aggressive, so much so, she was kept in isolation. We weren't even supposed to be able to see her but she seemed to take to us rather quickly so the shelter made special arrangements for us to visit her every day for about a week. Eventually, we were able to introduce her to our first and oldest dog, Aurora. They quickly hit it off, much to everyone's surprise and I'll never forget the first time they ran and played together; seeing that Carin would fit in our family sealed the deal. We immediately enrolled Carin into a (very expensive) obedience training program in order to help her overcome her fear agression. She fought us at times but eventually did very well and could attend group classes without needing to be muzzled. All the while, her ans Aurora became true sisters. They'd play for hours in the back yard if we'd let them and slept entangled in the same bed every night. This all changed one night last October when we heard a loud commotion in the back yard. We ran out and separated the two of them; this was the first time that they had fought and we were stunned. Everything seemed to boil over and they returned to their shard bed and 'hugged it out' all night. Early the next morning, however, something triggered in Carin and a very violent fight sprang into action and we were all devastated by the results. Since October, we have been orchestrating a delicate dance of separation between Carin and Aurora. We've saught help and implemented numerous strategies and techniques in order to overcome whatever it is that has flipped in Carin's mind. We did have a trainer guarantee that she could fix the problem but that would come with a $5000 price tag. Carin is SO worth it but it's something we simply cannot afford. So, we are trying one last time to save not only Carin but our entire family...we need to rehome Carin. We've accepted that keeping them separated for the last 6 months has not given either of them any sort of real life. It is our belief that, given the right environment, Carin would be an amazing companion for the right person. We don't think she should be in a home with other animals given her spontaneous change in course with Aurora. And she needs someone that can be a real leader to her but she is so loving and a complete sap if given the opportunity to be. I wish this would go without saying but, we don't want to put anyone in danger by rehoming her to someone that isn't fully prepared for the responsibility Carin demands and, if pushed to the ends of our resources, we will make the unthinkable yet necessary decision for our family. We just want to give Carin a chance at a good life! If you or someone you know thinks that they could help Carin find a happy forever family, please reach out to us! We will do what it takes to give Carin a fighting chance.
