Name: Sassy - In Foster in Rocky Mount, NC Sex: Female Spayed/Neutered: Yes Breed: Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (long coat) Weight: 17.5 lbs Height: in Estimated Birthdate: 2/26/2011 Fence Needed: No Location: Foster Home in Rocky Mount, NC Adoption Fee:$269 Date into Rescue: 02/26/2020 Reason for being in rescue: Lovingly surrendered by owners Special Needs: None noted What kind of home would be best for me: Sassy is a beautiful dog that needs to live in a one person home. She attaches to her person and will not share them. It does not matter the age or sex of the other person, Sassy will not accept them. She is a one owner kind of girl. Sassy is just fine living with other dogs. She is indifferent to cats. What is my personality like: Sassy is nine years old and had lived her life with an older single lady in Rhode Island. In October, she fell and broke her hip. Her son and his family took in Sassy while her lady was in the hospital. Sadly, her lady suffered a stroke and passed away about six weeks later. The family wasn't in a position to keep Sassy, and there was a great deal of chaos in their home. Sassy came to us very overweight and had lived a very un-dog life. She is some sort of Poodle mix, so we jokingly referred to her as a Porky Poo. Her lady had fed her a great deal of treats, including chocolate and lemon drops. She has been on a regular dining schedule of two meals a day following her morning and after work walks. Food is her love language! Sassy has been eating either Nutro small breeds senior, or Purina One Smartblend small bites, with a spoonful of wet food mixed in. She should not eat rawhides or dentastix as she has a tendency to demolish them without much chewing and it causes her intestinal issues. Happily, she is now down to a healthier weight of around 17.5 pounds and much improved muscle tone. She is allowed on the couch and bed and can jump up unassisted. She will sleep in the bed or in her crate, and sometimes can still be a noisy sleeper. Sassy has benefited from living with other dogs. She has learned how to walk on a leash and sniffs and explores joyfully. She usually has three walks a day, and a quick visit to the yard before bed. She is both house and crate trained; the only accident she has had was due to a bout of intestinal issues from devouring rawhides and dentastix too quickly, which has been all cleared up. (She is very food motivated and has quickly learned how to 'sit', but she can be a bit fickle with 'come'. Sassy really needs a home with one person - it could be either another lady or a man - preferably one that is home some for lounging on the couch with or will take her on car 'adventures'. She does fine with other dog friends and enjoys visits to the dog park. She has met another cat while she was with us, but, I don't think she has ever lived with one. She didn't try to chase or attack the cat, but, did find herself consumed with curiosity and tried to work up the courage to get closer! She has been ok around older children, but, we haven't seen her with small children. We suspect she may have had an unhappy tail pulling at some point as she can sometimes get grumpy and run away if petted around the base of her tail by surprise. Sassy has not snapped or bitten anyone. She doesn't enjoy being carried, and gets squirmy to be put back on the floor. If she gets uncomfortable in a situation, she will retreat to her crate or another quiet spot until she feels brave again. How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly Tips and Tidbits: Sassy's estimated birthday is 02/26/2011. House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
