About SIRIUS

Proudly present SIRIUS, SIRIUS was rescued months ago and is now living temporarily in a foster home on Orcas island. With all dogs ending up in shelters, found stray rescue groups do not have a lot of information regarding breed, age or background. But at the end it is about a precious being who has the right and needs to be welcomed in the fitting home that is dog-savvy, is eager to welcome the dog fulfilling the needs of the dog (space, activities, etc). SIRIUS is about 1.5 yrs old, neutered , up to date with vaccinations. He is energetic, Protective, Loyal, Brave, Cautious, Obedient, Alert, Curious, Because of their nature as social pack animals, dogs want us to tell them what they're supposed to do. Their goal is to help the pack survive, and they do it by following the pack leader. It's the job of the pack leaders to provide protection and direction. Establishing and enforcing rules, boundaries, and limitations is how they provide direction to the pack. ADR.org assumes- based on behavior observations - that SIRIUS was left by himself, figuring out what to do with his energy and how his behavior would impact how he is accepted by other dogs. Because our dogs want to please us, their Pack Leaders, our approval becomes the positive reinforcement they need. We just have to be clear and consistent with what we want. Creating rules, boundaries, and limitations and enforcing them provides that clarity and consistency for our dog. SIRIUS loves other dogs (male/female; big or small) and he is learning when to back off as he gets so excited. Generally he is very submissive and tries to fit in and please. SIRIUS would benefit from a lot of physical exercise, to burn off his energy, make him happy and exhausted when it's time to return to a calm and submissive state with a timeout. An owner that is most of the time gone will not be able to provide what SIRIUS needs. while he is wired crate trained, this containment is not the right place for him all day. A secured backyard, and possibly another dog in the same home would help with that, too. Regarding children, we do not know his reactions to toddlers, and younger children because he is still a puppy to some extend himself and his energy would increase, but there is also the risk that he might run them over. As for behavior around cats, he has been around some in the foster home. there are encouraging signs that with enough management he could live well with a cat if the owners are patient and good in introducing them. SIRIUS is a very good dog - just looking for the fitting home. there is that specific home out there somewhere!
