DARYL (Chihuahua/Terrier mix - Brown w/white accents and a black wash) (2 VIDEOS INCLUDED!) Only $45 adoption!!! My adoption profiles tend to be long & very detailed. Please read the ENTIRE Adoption Profile (all the way to the FAQ) so you understand everything about this dog & if you are a good match for him. Daryl had a very very hard start in life. He was confiscated from a hoarder, along with multiple other dogs, for filthy conditions & having very little amounts of food, water, space, & no shelter. You may have seen the case on the news for the 35+ Chihuahuas found abandoned by an evicted tenant in east Phoenix. Here is a link to see the story: https://www.azfamily.com/news/chihuahuas-found-abandoned-by-evicted-tenant-in-east-phoenix/article_14325912-8e34-11e9-a4c2-0bdb8b6b9c4f.html While at the shelter he was fearful, avoidant, and handling sensitive, and that landed him on their euthanasia list. That is when Safe Haven stepped in. I pulled 5 of the most fearful ones from that case. Daryl came here with Roslyn, Josie, Wendy, & Angel. Daryl is still fearful, & needs someone who is patient & gentle, & who will continue to work with him no matter how long it takes. He would do best in a quiet home that only has 1 or 2 people, & already has a small friendly well trained dog that could be a role model for him. My theory on why some pets that come out of a hoarders house are friendly, & others are extremely fearful is that the friendly ones did not spend much time there and only had to suffer through the abuse for a short time. I think hoarders look for people advertising that they want to give their pet away for free, and so that pet originally came from a normal home, and experienced a normal life for it's first few years. For the really fearful ones, I think it's because a hoarder does not typically seek any type of Veterinary care for the animals that they acquire. This includes getting them spayed/neutered. So the ones that weren't fixed when the hoarder found them typically end up getting pregnant at the hoarders house & have litter after litter. I believe the ones that come out of a hoarders house that are extremely fearful & have a hard time adjusting to a normal life, were the ones that were born in that situation & have grown up in that chaotic abusive mess. So they have never known a normal life. Therefor it's harder for them to adjust... Daryl has come a long way in the time he has been here. He has gone from taking thrown treats, to taking treats from my hand. Then after awhile, he started to show interest in me and sniffed my hand when cleaning out the crate. He will come out of the crate now & even follow me around. He is still not comfortable with petting though, and definitely doesn't like getting picked up. I can pick him up with a towel if I have to, but I go very slowly & I spend time and pet him first for a couple minutes, and I have to corner him to do that. He freezes and shakes when I pet him, but he lets me do it. He is very sweet, but still very scared & needs someone who will go slow with him. I can show you how I have been working with him. I think he will do much better in a more mellow home...and would do better, and progress faster, with someone who has more time to spend one on one time with him. Daryl has 2 cute little wrinkles that he gets on his forehead when he is thinking about something. He really is a very cute dog... He likes stuffed animals & will sometimes steal my socks. The words he has learned so far are: No, outside, treat, & he will come when called. All of the pets at Safe Haven receive basic training when they come here. What each pet learns depends on how much time I have had to work with them, & if that pet has any additional issues that need to be focused on first. The pets here are always improving. Birthday: 6/15/13 Weight at last Vet visit: Weight: 10 lbs. (Daryl came in underweight. He has gained weight & is just under 10 lbs now and this is a good weight for him.) Cats: Daryl is great with cats. He doesn't really even pay attention to them. Small Dogs: Daryl is very good with other small dogs. Sometimes he is shy at first, but he ends up playing with everyone. Daryl would do best with another small dog that is friendly and social that could be a role model for him. Here is a video of him playing with other small dogs: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jVBnpwWPaEPhbke98 Large Dogs: He is terrified of large dogs. I leave his crate open during the day, and he will not come out if the big dogs are out. I think this is one of the reasons he has not progressed further in the time he has been here... Kids: It depends on the kid. With his high fear level, kids would need to be 12 yrs or older. They would need to understand how afraid he is and that they can't just reach out and pet him. Your home would also need to be a quiet, mellow home. Men: Unknown Women: He has gotten used to me and even wags his tail when he sees me sometimes. He gets upset whe
