About Jay (west)

Hi, my name is JAY - ID#A4366444. I am a neutered male, red Mastiff and American Pit Bull Terrier. The shelter staff think I am about 3 years old, and I have been at the shelter since Jan 09, 2020. Big ol' Jay is a friendly giant who just doesn't know his strength or size. He pulls hard on a leash, but is gentle and dainty with handlers. He is dog selective, so a meet and greet would be in order if you already have a dog. Here are some notes from some volunteers who recently spent time with Jay: 1/19/2020 EVALUATION While attempting to get neighboring dog out of kennel this canine approached front of kennel with loose body. Handler talked to dog in soft voice and canine allowed to easily be leashed taking treats throughout. Once out pulled extremely hard. Allowed collar placement. Canine entered yard nervous and allowed greetings. Explored yard and as time progressed canine began playing with helper and another dog in yard. Wary of lead but allowed handler to grab leash to remove. 1/26/2020 WALK Easy to leash and pull from kennel. He's very large and uncoordinated walking on leash. No reaction to any dogs barking at him. Long walk on trail. I was able to harness him easily with my leash. Away from shelter he seemed to start to understand how to walk. He was walking more next to me. He was also easy to put back in kennel. Allowed handling with his neck and a leash. Also not super treat motivated but when he did take treats he was gentle. 2/4/2020 ENRICHMENT Had Jay out with Duchess the dog he came in with. Utilized the front yard with chain link gate in between dogs ran around along fence and appeared social through fencing. Jay was affiliative with handler, very puppy like, and energetic. Canine is unaware of how large he is, jumped on handler a few times but mostly self entertained in yard. Met Duchess on leash on walk back to kennel and gave a play bow. 2/10/2020 ENRICHMENT Play group with Duchess, the dog he came in with. Very social and affiliative. Jay loves tennis balls and will chew them apart. Due to his size and appearance, Jay weill have a tough time getting adopted. We are hoping someone will look past his gruff looks and see the sweet puppy inside. Please consider making Jay your next furry family member.
