About Puff

Pomeranian
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Puff is a 2 year old female purebred Pomeranian, about 7 pounds. Owner surrender. You wouldn't know it by looking at her, but she suffered serious neglect and was surrendered to the rescue as skinny, covered in fleas, nearly hairless due to massive flea dermatitis, parasite ridden with a terrible yeast infection AND we thought she was pregnant! (She didn't end up having a litter thank goodness!) Now, she is feeling and looking the best she's ever been. BUT, as a result of her neglect (and very probable inbreeding) she will always have special needs and is looking for a family who will be willing to take the time, money, and most importantly love that it takes to care for a needy, medical dog. She has come a very long way over the past months in foster care but is at the point where she can find a family willing to continue her journey wherever it may go. Due to her severe flea dermatitis, she will need daily medications and monthly injections to manage her skin condition and itching for the remainder of her life as well as special shampoos and a variety of supplements to help. She needs to remain on monthly flea prevention, Simparica, as well. If left unattended for long periods of time, she is prone to creating large bloody hotspots and will pull out her fur. For this reason, she almost always wears clothing and a medical collar while we are away. She has a surplus of sprays, oils, herbs, and supplements to help her feel more comfortable. Her skin has improved significantly as has the itching and fungal infection but it is still very oily and tends to weep. Due to the smell and moisture, Puff is bathed every two-three days. This may change over time with continued diligent care. Besides her skin, she also has an incredible, almost constant thirst (naturally she urinates a lot as well). Both of our vets are puzzled and despite bloodwork, urinary tests and a whole pile of other medical tests, we can not identify a cause. Her water must be managed carefully. If she is left without easy access to water, Puff will find it, whether it is your cats water bowl, your potted plants, the bathtub drain, mud puddles outside when you aren't looking, etc, she will find it! And then she will drink all of it, later to snort it all out her nose in a shaking spewing frenzy anywhere between one to five times depending on how much she drank. This can make her bath time a challenge. Currently, all that can be done is manage her water intake (providing small amounts of water periodically) and using a 'sippy' bottle that slows her drinking, It attaches to her crate and will be provided. While she does OK alone and is currently alone for close to seven hours a day, she would GREATLY benefit from having someone home more often (or even all day) to give her more frequent potty breaks. Since her skin is still oily it tends to weep around her neck area when she wears her cone, caking her fur and worsening her smell. Puff really does love to be with you all the time and would most definitely flourish in a home with humans around to hang out with. She's an amazing pup, despite being genetically... troubled. She just needs an adopter willing to love her for who she is and be ready for whatever might happen next. Experience with needy dogs or dogs with similar issues is a plus. All of her medical records will be provided with her adoption and her foster will offer as much support as possible after adoption. Now, with all that said, Puff is an INCREDIBLE little girl. She is just about the sweetest dog ever and loves everyone, kids included. All she ever wants is to hang out with you or to play with her squeaky toys. She will be like your little shadow. She gets along great with cats and can co-exist with other dogs, although she has gotten into squabbles with our other foster dog who is also female, over chew sticks and toys. She has never tried to initiate play and shows no interest in other dogs but there's a chance she might like male dogs better. She's really just more of a people person, (or a people dog I suppose)! She does awesome on walks, and will be right by your side, though she does like to take her time and isn't a fan of jogging. Puff also knows a few basic commands and is improving on her potty training everyday. She is truly an amazing dog and quite the little character. She's fairly quiet too and when she's not itching, loves a nice warm lap to lay on. She's not exactly an easy dog but she will be ever so rewarding as most medical dogs are. Her people are out there somewhere, maybe those people are you! Adoption contract and fee applies. All adoptable dogs can be met at adoption events hosted every weekend. For a list of scheduled events go to: https://www.facebook.com/SmidgetRescue/events . Smidget Rescue is not a shelter, and dogs cannot be seen at the Rescue location. All dogs are fostered throughout the Puget Sound area and are brought to the events where they can be met by prospective adopters.
