About Harper

Adoption Fee: $75.00
Lab
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Harper is a 6 year old female Black Lab who craves attention and loves to play. She likes to fetch like any lab, but does not like to release or drop...hopefully something her new owner can work with her on. I got Harper as a puppy at 8 weeks and she was raised with my two smaller dachshunds. In 2016, I re-homed a white Husky named Kadee and they became fast friends and Harper remained the alpha. In January 2019, my daughter had to move back in with me unexpectedly and brought her 4 dogs (3 male, 1 female) and 3 kittens. 2 of her dogs were male labs and under a year at the time. They had been around my dogs for several days at a time while my daughter traveled without incident. In March of 2019 fight broke out when I went to do their morning feeding, like any other morning, and Harper and the 2 male labs all attacked Kadee, leaving her with severe puncture wounds and bites. From that day forward, Harper and the youngest lab, Duck, became aggressive towards each other. It got to the point where my dogs were locked in my room while the other 2 were out and then the other two were crated so my girls could come out. There were 3 more attacks with all 4 dogs after that and Kadee was the one who was attacked. I was also injured in trying to break up the fights. I spoke to my vet several times and we determined that Duck was the instigator and the others joined in in the heat of the moment. We were able to place Duck in an incredibly loving home in November and he has flourished which makes us so happy. He needed someone to give him the time and energy he needed and deserved. Harper has always been incredibly protective of me and folows me EVERYWHERE!!!She gets jealous if another dog wanted my attention and she would come over and worm her way in if I was petting or playing with one of the other dogs. Fast forward to this morning. While sitting and drinking my coffee, Kadee was laying on the floor in front of me and Harper had come over and started sniffing her back end. When she lingered for longer than I thought she should, I commanded her to get in her spot on the couch. That's when she started attacking Kadee and then Moose, the other lab, joined in. Harper did not bite thru her skin (probably because of her winter coat) but Moose did as he was trying to shake her at her neck. I was the most severely injured with several bite marks to my hands in trying to pull them off. I just can't do this any more. I really don't want to put her down. I would like to find her a home without any other dogs so she can continue to be the alpha without any other worries. She would be an awesome companion for an older couple or person. She likes to sit by you and her favorite spot is on my bed or sofa by the window so she can look outside. A younger couple or person as well would be great for her too. She has been around children a few times and the only issue was she would get so excited she would try to jump up on them. Her jumping days are slowly winding down although she can get pretty riled up when I come home some times. Completely house trained and stays in my fenced in yard and will spend more time outside when the weather is nice. She is able to open the back door and lets herself (and anyone else) in when she is ready. She has not been aggressive at all toward the 3 cats (which we have been able to re-home 2). She will merely sniff them and then go about her business. The 2 older cats would sit and let her sniff, the kitten heads for the hills. She was spayed as a puppy and microshipped. She has been on monthly flea and tick peventative (Simparica) for about 18 months...the result of my daughters dogs coming for a weekend and brought fleas into my home. Prior to that I did not have any of my dogs on anything since they never left my back yard and I never had any issues. I have never done heartworm either as they are only in my yard and are not out much during the summer heat. I am very careful not to have any standing water around to allow mosquitos to breed. She eats Purina One with Salmon. I have raised all my dogs on a Salmon based food as it has maintained their skin and coat beautifully. Thank you for reading this lengthy post but I felt the more honest information I could provide, the better for all parties.
