About Axel

Axel is a handsome redbone coonhound mix, mixed with something large, perhaps a dane. Axel came to the shelter weighing 72 pounds, but he has put on a few pounds since then. Axel is about 10 years old and had spent every day of his life at the end of a chain. Every day, for ten long years, his master would come home to a friendly, waggy-tailed dog, pass him by as he entered the house, and never pay him any attention or take him for a walk or get him off the chain to play. The neighbors would sometimes go over to pet him or give him treats, and they felt so sorry for him, especially as time passed and he aged. Eventually, Axel stopped even greeting the master who ignored him as if he had finally accepted that his fate was sealed. The first time the humane officers allowed Axel to run freely in the fenced yard after they brought him to the shelter, he ran and ran and kicked up his heels and ran some more! Everyone was so happy for him to be able to run free at last. He needs a nice fenced yard wherever he goes! He may be 10 years old, but he is happy and energetic and has a lot of living to do. Here's an update from Axel's foster mom: I just want to tell you what we've learned about Axel. He is so sweet. He loves to be pet. He'll take his head and push it under your hand if he wants attention. He cries when we put him in the crate at night but calms down and sleeps well. He's only had two accidents and both were by the kitchen door. I think he tried to tell us he needed to go outside but got excited. He hasn't gone in his crate at all. He has so much energy. We are trying to teach him to bring the ball back. He loves to chase it. He also tries to jump for it if you throw it in the air. He tears apart stuffed animals but he loves playing with them. We are trying to get him interested in a rope toy. We have trouble believing he's 10 years old. He's great with Lucy too. She's not much of a player. I think if he was around a dog with more energy, he'd enjoy playing with them. He doesn't pay her much attention unless she's giving him a treat or throwing the ball. He takes treats very gently from everyone. After he gets all the attention he can, he lays down to nap. He loves love. If you start petting him, he leans against you. He's a great companion. Axel would do best in a home with older children as he doesn't understand his size.
