About Stella

Adoption Fee: $50
Australian Cattle Dog / Shar-Pei
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Looking for a great guard and family dog? Stella is quite the personality, very engaging, loving and a bit of a clown. We adopted her from our local shelter. They rescued her from the Crow Reservation. We suspect she was on her own for the first two years of her life. She came to us with an irritated eye (required Entropian surgery) and fleas. She was un-housebroken, didn't know how to walk on a leash and had a fear of the car and people. Despite this rough start, we found that she was eager to please and highly trainable. She responds well to praise, treats, and on rare occasions, a shaker can. We live by a dog park, and she is able to interact and play with the dogs there at least once a day. She loves to chase, and wrestle with a wide variety of breeds and sizes. She loves to hike, and is great off the leash and stays close. She walks well on a leash, and follows many commands. She also enjoys agility training and jumping. She has a confidant, forward personality, with quirky playful behaviors that amuse us daily. The shelter says she is part Shar Pei. She has the Shar Pei muzzle and spotted tongue, but her behaviors seem mostly cattle dog. NOTE: This dog MUST go to a family that is familiar with the aggressive nature of a dog with bite potential. Stella needs a home that knows how to work with a reactive dog, and can give her time to establish herself in a new household. She would do very well with another canine playmate. When we are on trips she loves going to the kennel, because of the dogs there. We have had her for a little over a year, and have loved having her in our life. However, our living situation is not working out for a guard dog, and we are hoping to re-home Stella to avoid euthanasia. She has never exhibited any aggressive behaviors with the three of us, but is highly protective around our house and property. She can be unpredictable when tied up too (that seems to become her property), or if someone gets in her space too quickly. We live in a high traffic neighborhood, across from an elementary school. Both home entrances open to the street. Friends-including our daughter's teenage friends- come and go often. Because of these variables, accidents have happened. We are concerned about other's safety, but realize what a great dog she is for the right family.
