About Midge

Adoption Fee: $100.00
Jack Russell
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Midge was born timid due to breeding. She was placed just shy of 6-weeks-old which is too young to leave the litter and adds to her lack of confidence. When she reached her new home, she was thrown in with three older terriers and left to fend for herself. She was the really really really low dog on the totem pole and spent every waking moment trying to ward off the aggressive play from three older dominant dogs. This broke her. All she would do was sit in the corner and poop all over herself. Then they would yell at her because they didn't like her behaviors and this cowed her further. Her first owner was a co-worker of mine. I warned him two Jack Russell puppies would not raise themselves. When this prediction proved true and he was ready to throw Midge away, I took her home to stay with me and my father. She's been with me six years now? I adore her. She's a dedicated, loving companion. My father passed two years ago so Midge moved in with me and my Chihuahua. She was raised with Tootsie so she viewed Tootsie as the dominant dog and until this past year, we've not had trouble. A while back Midge began challenging Tootsie and we've had three minor attacks. Why the challenging behaviors? Because Midge is getting older and figuring out Tootsie isn't the boss? Because it's the nature of Jack Russells to challenge other females? Because Tootsie is growing old and weak? Whatever the reason, our days of safety and peace appear to be at an end. As much as it hurts my heart to let Midge go, I must do so because it's what is best for her and to protect Tootsie from serious injury. Secondary issue%BD'%BD|%BD'%BD|Midge loves to travel in the car. She gets excited and bounces around too much but seems to enjoy it. Midge despises traveling in the van! She pants, whines and has a melt-down. I've tried confining her to a dog seat, confining her to a crate, letting her be loose, tranquilizers, frequent stops with outside walks to calm her, short drives, long drives%BD'%BD|%BD'%BD|.nothing works. Midge hates the van for some unknown reason. She cannot travel with me. I believe she could travel with two adults; one to drive and one to tend to her. If someone were available to hold, calm and encourage her, I think she could handle traveling. Third issue%BD'%BD|%BD'%BD|..Midge is completely convinced the cat is not showing sufficient respect and lords over him whenever he dares to come out of his private space. The cat is not permitted to move anywhere without being harassed, crowded, poked with a nose, whined at and even snapped at if he has the audacity to get too near to me. Being a Jack Russell, this little dog naturally has a high level of energy. She shadows my every step throughout the day to work that energy off. She can keep up with any amount of walking or hiking. She wants nothing more in life than to be with me, every minute of the day and night. If I'm unavailable, she lies on my clothes or bed. She is very dedicated to her person. She is also extremely possessive and protective of her person. Other dogs or cats are not permitted too near. For the above reasons, I believe Midge would be best served in a household where she could be an only child. She plays well with other dogs one-on-one but doesn't do at all well when multiple dogs approach and scare her like when entering a dog park. Probably due to her early puppy experience as a toy for the three older dogs! Without the threat of other pets in her household, she won't have to guard or defend which eliminates any problems. It would be good if someone were home with her during the day. Sitting alone all day has a negative behavioral effect on her. Boarding her at a kennel was positively more than she could bear! It was hard for her to come back from that experience and I've never done that to her since. She has a neighbor friend who takes her when I have to be gone from home. If you can provide a home where someone is present during the day to keep her company, allow Midge to be an only child, have a fenced yard, have what it takes to deal with the energy and intelligence level of a Jack Russell and would like to meet her, let's schedule a play date.
