About Scruffy

Scruffy is an 8-9 year old West Highland Terrier. He weighs 25 pounds. Scruffy always has one ear up and one ear down. He does well with other dogs, cats, and kids. Unlike most Terriers, Scruffy is a quiet boy. He doesn't bark. If you let Scruffy outside and he wants to come back in he does make the cutest little howl. He starts softly and if you don't come open the door for him he gradually gets louder. Scruffy loves his sweaters and will proudly model the ugliest sweater. Scruffy would enjoy a home with people who are around much of the time and does need a fenced yard because he does not hear well. Scruffy is a special guy. He came into rescue from a southern shelter where he sat bald and bleeding for a month. Scruffy's ear canals were swollen shut so he couldn't hear and he was an itchy, hot pink, bald mess. His eyes were matted and he could not see well. Scruffy didn't get in that condition overnight and had probably been miserable for years. Even though Scruffy was absolutely miserable he was always sweet. Scruffy is loved by many in our rescue and has had many people care for him. He has many nicknames including Sruffadupalous, and Scruffers. Scruffy's foster family gave him daily medicated baths, eye meds and several courses of antibiotics which made him feel awful but helped his skin. Several volunteers drove him to many vet appointments including the dermatologist in Des Moines. Everyone loves this guy. Scruffy's ear canals are open again and his ear infections are gone. He has grown most of his fur back. He may never grow the fur back under his neck and on his chest. Scruffy is allergic to his environment and does need daily meds. He takes Apoquel for his allergies and gets Tacrolimus eye drops twice a day with a moisturizing drop in between because his eyes don't produce enough tears. He eats an Omega 3 supplement every day to help his coat and needs a bath with a medicated shampoo once a week. Scruffy has a fatty lipoma by his front leg which isn't bothering him. Scruffy's Apoquel costs $2.18 per day. His Tacrolimus eye drops are $48 a bottle and last about three months. His Optixcare eye gel costs $15 a tube and lasts a couple months. The love Scruffy will provide you is priceless. Scruffy is housetrained, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, heartworm tested and microchipped.
