About Ruby

Meet Ruby This girl's story will break your heart. She's been treated so poorly throughout her life and yet she is the sweetest, gentlest soul you will find. As you read further, know that Ruby is safe and cared for as we look to find her true forever home. Ruby is an alumnus of Smithgall Humane Society - BEFORE - we started doing our home checks and vet references several years ago. She is an example of why (thanks to an incredible volunteer) we put checks in place to help prevent what Ruby has gone through. Ruby was adopted out about five years ago. During that time it appears she was terribly neglected. When her owner stopped caring for her completely, Ruby found herself in a rescue organization that was so awful it was closed recently by the Dept. of Agriculture. Luckily, we were able to get her back. She arrived to the safety (and we promise safety) of our shelter on November 18, 2019. Ruby is six years old now. She is a Jack Russell/Beagle mix. Ruby is one of the calmest and sweetest dogs you will find. She is so loving and affectionate. She loves people, dogs and cats. She walks well on a leash and enjoys being out and about with volunteers and staff. Ruby is overall healthy, thank goodness, but she is well under-weight by at least ten pounds. Her healthy weight should be between 43 and 45 pounds. Ruby seems relieved to have a place to put her head at night and receive food and shelter and most important loving hands to assure her all is well. She looks at you with earnest eyes as if to say 'thank you' for getting me back. Ruby will make for a loving companion. Despite all she's been through, she still loves with her whole heart. We've promised Ruby only happy times ahead. If you are able to open your heart and home to this amazing dog, please get your applications in. She is exceptional. As pretty on the inside as she out. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
