About Leila

Adoption Fee: $50
Pit Bull mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Leila (affectionately known as Leila-Belle or 'yay-yuh'...because I have a 1 year old) is a 9-month old pit-mix who was picked up after almost being run over when her owner had abandoned her for several days at around 3 or 4 months old. She has been in my care since May. While in my care, she has been spayed, given all her puppy shots, been house-trained & crate-trained (thank goodness she is so good about her crate), learned how to walk well on a leash, & learned basic commands (sit, down, stay, come, 'leave it', & 'let's go'/heel). She's come far, but she still needs to be worked with as she is a very energetic pup with trust issues after being abandoned. I am a disabled single mom who has been having flare-ups of my illnesses all summer, & I cannot provide the kind of home Leila deserves. She needs the opportunity to get her energy out in a healthy manner, &, because I cannot provide that for her, she gets herself into trouble that she doesn't deserve to get into. Leila is very intelligent, sweet, loyal, driven to please, treat-driven, curious, adventurous, silly, athletic, &, as already mentioned, energetic. In the right environment, she will thrive & give back all of the love & effort that gets put into her. She needs a stable home, as she already has trust issues from being abandoned & has already been passed around. Also, because of this, she needs a mom/dad/family that is familiar with dogs & can socialize her properly. I have not been able to take her out like she needs myself, & on the few occasions I have, she barks and pulls at other people/animals out of anxiety. She is not vicious, but because she is a pit-mix barking at them, many people can mistake her fear as aggression. But, she quickly makes friends with folks who toss her treats. She is also extremely sweet and silly with everyone at home. She does okay with my dogs, though she is a bit much for them & sometimes picks on my smaller, older dog. I think she will be okay with other dogs with the proper socialization as long as they are not smaller or low-energy seniors. Leila will thrive in an active home. She stays inside most of the time, but she loves being outside, though like any pup, she will chew things up if she gets bored. She would even love to learn to do a 'job' or sport. `She picks up things very quickly. She learned her name the first day she was here. Also, I had her come with me to the restroom when she first got here...now she runs to the restroom if I ever say I need to go out-loud lol. Leila is probably the bravest pup I've ever cared for. Water does not phase her...she is fairly easy to bathe & will sneak into the tub while it's draining after I take my son out. She lets me clip her nails with no fuss. She is the only dog brave enough to stand on the hard floor while my son goes high-speed in his walker as she artfully dodges him. And...she would rather challenge the vacuum cleaner than run from it. Lastly, Leila will do best in a home that does not have LITTLE kids. My son is one year old, &, though he adores her, she forgets he is not just another puppy & has become snippy towards him (overly playful...she is not aggressive). She does fine remembering not go go overboard with him as long as an adult is within arms reach. She will probably do fine with older children who can communicate a calm assertiveness. I also think that she will do just fine with small children once she mellows out with age. We love Leila & have put a lot into her, & we want to find just the right home for her, because she deserves it.
