for more pictures and information, please check out Kai's post on Adopt-a-Pet: https://www.adoptapet.com/pet/25543000-upper-marlboro-maryland-bluetick-coonhound-mix Kai is available for adoption within a 4 hour radius of Washington, DC or anywhere we have a volunteer that can accomplish a home visit. His adoption fee is $200. Adoption application is here: https://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/E53LXc4bsw6r997fuK4 Our process: Adoption application, vet reference check (if you have current pets or have had pets in the past), home visit and meet/greet with the dog, trial period which is generally 2 weeks if you live close enough to the foster (Upper Marlboro, MD), and then formal adoption if the trial period is successful. We took the plunge and did a DNA test on Kai to determine his breed mix. Boy were we wrong in our guesses!! We had one breed right but the rest were quite a surprise. Kai is a true Heinz 57 - mix. Here is his lineage: 12.5% Bluetick Coonhound 12.5% Beagle 12.5% Golden Retriever 12.5% Shiba Inu 16.67% Asian group (like Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Chow Chow) - we guess Husky as there are not many Malamutes or Chow's in Japan 16.67% Middle Eastern/African group (like Rhodesian Ridgeback, Afghan Hound, Saluki) We guess Afghan Hound as Kai has a tall/slight body. There are Afghan Hounds in Japan (rare) but Saluki's are very rare. 16.67% Terrier Group (like Jack Russel Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, etc). We guess Mini Pin. Kai gender: male size: medium. Weighs 48 pounds Age: estimated at 3 years, 6 months old (as of March 10, 2019) Breed: see above Energy level: medium to high. Needs daily exercise Shedding level: medium. He sheds far less than the resident Labs in his foster home. He will shed more in the spring and fall. House-broken: yes Crate trained: yes Basic Obedience: some (sit, stay, come, shake) Leash trained: will pull but he is getting so much better on the leash. Kai can be leash reactive at times with other dogs, horses, etc. He will need an ADULT handler who can continue to work with him on his leash skills and leash reactivity. If someone doesn't have the experience but is willing to invest the time and funds into training, that would work also. Good with other dogs: most other dogs. Needs proper introduction. He can sometimes have issues with dominant dogs. Good with cats: yes Good with children: yes - 4 years old+ Kai is a great dog and would make an excellent running buddy for an active person or active family. He does better with older children but has been around children as young as 2 years old for an extended period. Kai LOVES to play but there are some dogs he just doesn't get along with. He would really enjoy going to a home that has another young, friendly playful dog and with a family/person who will get him out for daily exercise. Kai can get overstimulated fairly easily if there is too much activity or noise so he would be better in a suburban or rural area without much traffic. He'd not do well in apartment living or in high density housing areas. Kai is up to date on vaccines, micro-chipped, neutered, heart worm negative and current on heart worm and flea/tick preventatives. His vaccine were just updated (June 12, 2019) and he needs nothing until June 2020. Kai is not trustworthy off leash so he needs either to be on leash or on a tether when outside (supervised) or in a 6 foot fenced yard. We have a 4 foot fence that has vertical tines and he cannot get out of it but he can open gates (so they have to be locked).
