About SWEETIE

- 5 yr. old female dog - Basenji mixed breed - Sweet temperament - Surgery on shoulder to correct OCD (cartilage separation) very successful - All vaccines, heart-worm, and flea/Tick medications up-to-date - No heart-worms - Seeking a loving household, with fenced yard (older children are probably better), and devoted owner ready to spoil her and bond with her. HISTORY: Sweetie was found wandering around an apartment complex with a Chihuahua. A woman at the complex posted photos of the dog and called HART to retrieve Sweetie (she opted to care for the Chihuahua). The owner was eventually located, but did not want to reimburse us for vaccinations and vet care: he simply surrendered her. We had placed Sweetie with an adoptive family, but she was returned, holding her leg up. Sweetie was transported to Dr Milton, a veterinary orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham. The surgery that was required was worth every bit of the $1600+ & it was a complete success. A HART donor paid for Sweetie's surgery. Sweetie 'talked' to us on the entire hour-long trip home even though she had been given a pain killer. She settled in just fine, getting along well with the other dogs. We did find out pretty soon that she was a lap dog. She is extremely house-broken, crate trained, and knows a few commands. Quite often she has something that she treats like her baby. It is usually a stuffed animal or dog bed. She will carry it everywhere she goes. She is very possessive with her 'baby' and absolutely does not like for another dog to get near her. She is totally a house dog and only goes outside to potty. When she is done, she is quite ready to come back inside. The dogs are fed in their crates, and Sweetie will snarl at any dog who gets near her crate and her food. She is not food aggressive in a dangerous way. All she does is snarl. I can reach down and pick up her bowl if it has food in it, and she is fine with that. Sweetie isn't a 'barker', but she will yodel when she speaks to you!
