About Guppy

Adoption Fee: $300
Feist / Border Collie
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Guppy is a super sweet, kind, and loving little girl. Gets along with everyone, loves to play and chew on treat-stuffed toys. She's learning to bring back her toy for fetch, too. She's crate trained and house-trained, walks great on a leash (with some minor pulling only when excited), and is doing well with basic commands. She loves to play with toys in the house, wrestle with her buddies, tug-of-war, or cuddle on the couch. Her favorite things include: chasing or being chased, anything edible, sitting on various furniture, and posing like a seal for attention. Guppy is a silly goofball but is independent and adventurous. She's a good guard dog and will bark at intruders, but absolutely loves most people and all dogs. She's still somewhat puppy-like but has some good manners and some training now. She has become friends with our kittens, but only under supervision. She gets excited when they are rambunctious so we cannot say she's 100% 'safe' around cats quite yet. Her strong hound nature makes her serious about 'hunting' bugs, birds, squirrels and small animals outside. She also will eat things she finds like anything organic, bugs, plants, etc., so she requires supervision outside and a minimum 5 foot high, dog-proof, fenced yard. Invisible or electric fences would not be appropriate for her level of drive. She has moderate energy, and could run/play for hours outside, or hang out inside when it's raining just as easily. She would be great with someone that likes to walk or hike and/or has some time to spend training or playing with her daily. She would probably be amazing at Scent-Work (nose work), or Barn Hunt competition. Guppy loves kids, but tends to jump on them out of excitement, and may scratch or push little ones over. We don't have a lot of small children around to habituate her to, so that's where she is right now with kids. She requires a person with at least a fair grasp of dog training who can be her consistent leader, otherwise she loses her manners. She would not be suitable as an off-leash dog (maybe only after extensive training), nor being left outside for long periods as she will dig, eat stuff and will try hard to get out and go 'hunting' on her own. As mentioned, Guppy has a problematic habit of picking up and eating things that she can find - anything edible or organic, hairballs, leaves, toy stuffing, small cat toys, plastic pieces, paperclips, dead things, etc., so she must be watched and/or strictly kept from random things getting into her mouth, or she could be in for serious health problems. She's good with the 'drop it' command, but the drive to eat anything she can find is strong and if you're not paying attention, it'll be gone in a flash. For these reasons, we think an experienced dog owner would be required for this wonderful, silly little girl. Someone with experience with hounds is ideal, with a securely fenced yard, and at least a minimum interest in dog training. She is up to date on her shots, is spayed, healthy with no known conditions, and is around 2 years old. In order to become Guppy's new family, an adoption application, vet references, a home visit, and at least 2 meet-n-greets will be a requirement, in addition to the adoption fee of $300 (which will be donated to one of the great rescue organizations we're working with). Guppy is in the Salisbury NC area so we cannot adopt her out beyond about a 100 mile radius. If she seems like the perfect edition to your family, please contact: Robin at [email protected]
